What is the future of Jolla?

Can I start by saying that I think Sailfish and Jolla are great products, and that the community here is excellent.

I have had my Jolla 1 for 3 years now, and have been very pleased with it. At the time I ordered it there was nothing in the market that I would have considered over it. I did not, and still do not wish to own an iPhone, and since the demise of Nokia/Symbian/N9 my only other choice really was/is an android device. Back then there was not one device that even tempted me. Now there are a few devices that I would consider, the top being the OnePlus 3T. And Jolla seems to have abandoned it's initial market, for others. The only way I can get a Sailfish device is to buy a compatible Android device and flash it, then I might not have a fully working product.

Anyway, my query is twofold.

  1. As I said I have been very pleased with my Jolla, and while it is still working, I am starting to wonder what I would replace it with if it should start failing.
  2. Also and possibly the bigger problem in my mind is that I have no idea where Jolla/Sailfish is heading. It seems that there is much speculation on the boards here as to what Jolla is planning next, where to source devices, new devices, what features are planned etc but there is VERY LITTLE actual information from Jolla itself. The usual response is that it very much depends on the partners, as they demand/require certain features. But it seems to me that it is not even 100% certain that these partners will be partners in a months time.

We need SOME MORE FREQUENT FEEDBACK from Jolla. Saying that they are all busy developing the OS, is not a good excuse any longer, especially as they can't even give us a short term roadmap as to what features/improvements to expect. If they do not start giving more feedback then I fear that the community will slowly start ebbing away.

Please if anyone from Jolla actually reads this, can we have some information as to what to expect in the coming year from Jolla.

Well...at the moment we all are awaiting the "montly update" since december. 2.0.5.6 was released on Nov.30th...

Be patient. It seems like the big Update 2.1 aswell as some device oriented stuff will be presented at the end of this month at the Mobile World Congress.

I have been, I think. I am just very frustrated at the lack of feedback/info from Jolla itself. I really want to stay on the ship and keep sailing, but the wind doesn't seem to be blowing. It seems that once in a while, less than once a month, we get a gust of wind, then nothing for ages.

I know the feeling. Lets hope a motor or windturbine will be installed at MWC :)

Mobile World Congress will give you the most exciting answer. Wait patiently. ;)

I hope so, I really do, but If all they announce is a watch, or another partner, then I think I will have to bail out and grab hold of the nearest bit of driftwood (namely android) :-(

Officially supported Sailfish OS on the Fairphone2...? The russian Oysters SF finally being made available...? Those things I would be excited about. But I will never buy something as stupid and redundant as a "smartwatch", so I really hope that is not what the announcement will be about...

While new devices etc are such Jolla has many considerations when to reveal what - the problem is the community is kept on the dark. It would be easier to be patient if at least regarding the OS itself there would be known roadmap. Not even schedule, but clear 'where are we going', and what are the next features to be implemented.

The development of SailfisOS is stagnating. Further joint ventures are announced, new low-cost entry-level mobile phones for the Bric market. But at the core of the operating system there is hardly any measurable progress. Weaknesses in CalDav / CardDav, rudimentary communication between applications - such as forwarding an appointment by mail, or an address leads directly to a navigation...? No chance. There is still no convincing eco-system for affordable services or apps. Backup of the complete user area would be possible, but it is not implemented. The browser is essentially outdated. Bluetooth is unstable and old. This list could be continued at will. It would be less serious if these were new restrictions. But basically I experience the same bleeding edges since Jolla Phone of the first generation. Substantial changes were generally only made by adapting new phones. And of course, the weaknesses, corners and edges can be admired in more languages.

Reading this https://www.mirror.co.uk/tech/russia-disconnect-internet-tomorrow-test-20763305 I am a bit concerned of the economical and technical partnership.

Just like https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2018-10-04/the-big-hack-how-china-used-a-tiny-chip-to-infiltrate-america-s-top-companies ?

Where are we moving?

That second article, was that the story where exactly zero evidence was put forward? And the people of Bloomberg never retracted the article or said sorry? I might be mixing things up, but in the last few years, the Bloomberg website has gone downhill. /edit: Yep, that was the article :) You are advised to not believe anything that is written there without further evidence.

what exactly is your concern? mass media are doing what they usually do, spread some bullshit, so people don't think about real problems. Russia will never disconnect from internet, lol. This is just another way to spend some taxpayers money and some shitty power play. As long as jolla do not sell out their values, any contributions to code base should be fine.
