There are are very few companies that support " open source or people powered " motto . From the past years Linux have evolved very much . I see people moving towards Linux these days .

Companies like System76 , they produce good products . They built their system for Linux users with modern hardware . But hard to get those products and could be bought only in US . I know that Jolla is a small company .You focus more on the OS than the phone now . May be you could focus on producing laptops with the same motto .

A laptop needs a proper operating system, not a touch-based OS designed for small screens and big fingers, so Jolla has nothing to gain from making Jolla/Sailfish laptops. Besides, they're just a software company now. Good thing there are already multiple well-established GNU/Linux distributions out there.

I didn't say anything about Sailfish on desktop . There are no good companies that motivates open source . See System76 is very good . Its hard to get that , they are build for Linux . Other companies like Dell they rule their customers . Dell 7559 costs $740 in US but in my country its $1300 . Now don't say that the difference would be for transpotation . Its such a shame .

Then why is Jolla relevant to this at all? Their only product is Sailfish, what do they or their customers stand to gain from them selling laptops with some random GNU/Linux distribution? It's a shame it has to be this way, but it really is not very difficult to just buy a laptop in a shop, put a USB stick in it and take 10 minutes to install a useful operating system.

I put the Jolla sticker that came with my phone on my laptop. That's pretty much it. :)

Jolla needs to expand in other ways . You can't expect developing and fixing bugs of the Sailfish OS throughout the timeline . It needs to have a backup . May be Jolla can get its income from and try new things .

uhuhuhu ?!?!? Why this is relevant? Just because Sailfish OS in about 85% of code is former Linux MeeGo, and both as Linux are general purpose operating system. That means Sailfish OS can be used as laptop/desktop/netbook as good as with a mobile. BTW see for Lenovo product https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenovo_IdeaPad_S100 which was in sell with MeeGo as primary and native OS. So your remarks like "why it is relevant" and "the only product is Sailfish" says only that you are not quite aware what means that Sailfish OS is the full Linux of general purpose, and can be used in various devices like above mentioned laptops, desktops, netbooks and also IVI, smart TV, smartwatches, navigations, house goods, intelligent buildings, educational tools, scientific calculators or AI etc.etc. - endless possibilities. I as a customer would buy such a Sailfish laptop, and would be very happy to have set of mobile+tablet+laptop (+ eventually smartwatch), all with Sailfish OS. Why this is so strange for you? I hope with China Sailfish consortium and Russian consortium such devices will be in sell pretty soon - the only question is will they be with standard Sailfish or something twisted in unacceptable manner. IMHO of course.

Just think: China and Russia want Sailfish OS as primary national OS and will have it only on mobiles? Will they use no desktops or other devices then mobiles, especially in governmental institutions? Really, do you believe in something like that?

I also think, that because of that above, Jolla ought to have a proposal for them of OS ready (I mean here ready for further adaptations with details, but not ready to use as final version) for laptop/desktop. Also to assure they will follow a standard established by Sailfish OS, what will reduce costs of incompatibilities in different solutions, even when there will be variants and modifications. And also will allow easier upgrading of OS in future, what will be an advantage of following the path of the standard Sailfish OS. That will prevent a general mess and in general a mess, and save a lots of problems for all sides interested in. Preventing against problems in design phase and in prototype phase is about 1000% cheaper then efforts to repair problems in already manufactured and/or delivered products.

And frankly: now I would buy Lenovo IdeaPad S100 with Sailfish immediately, if only a price would be reasonable. Or Jolla Tablet.

You are kidding.

May I ask what exactly do mean? I hope that a keyboard with a Sailfish device is not a joke for you? And why do you think so? Really, please explain. I just think those are natural consequences of a term "national OS". I really doubt new consortia want it only for mobile deceives, or in other words only for mobiles. And really it is Linux of general purpose, it is no joke. That, as consequence, implies also from IBM objectives in the past: a) create demand for Atom b) support Linux competitive to other dominating OSes. It is only a question of will to use it in this way IMHO.

  1. Russia has announced Sailfish as a national mobile OS. Didn't hear any official info from China, but I guess it's the same there.

  2. When you speak about desktop OS, you presume a windows-based multitasking and navigation optimized for mouse & keyboard, not swipe-based one of SFOS.

So, SFOS can be adapted for laptop/desktop usage, but it requires lots of work and there's no reason for Jolla to make it a high priority task.

Lol. MeeGo != Harmattan. This is different OS :D

@Aldrog 1st of all: lets take it easy, as conversation - not a fight, please. * I am about consequences or follow up of assumed it as national OS, yes mobile, but anyway that mean they assumed it is worth to work with it further. My supposition is that finally it will be used wider in context, not only in mobiles. * I'v seen a time ago Lenovo 22" touchable screen which has realised to be fully working computer built in the touchable screen. Having speakers, keyboard and mouse, lets say vertical Surface. I think Sailfish gestures navigation would work better with that device. Gestures and mouse and keyboard navigation can be combined and can be complementary to each other. * I think pretty soon Sailfish users there will want to have one ecosystem, so have the same OS in mobiles and at last in tablets, and in the next steps in desktops - if only they will find Sailfish OS useful in mobile devices. And I can bet they will. * Connected mobile device to a desktop will become an active silica tail on the desktop screen and would behave as pendrive or remote (similarly e.g. TeamViewer) controlled device (copying, synchronising, eg uploading routes for couriers and downloading logs of finished tasks) no meter via USB or via air. * Even today we already need synchronisation with other devices I think. And we do it manually when we can. They will need solution for high efficient support in everyday practise of huge institutions. And the need is the mother of invention - this is what I mean saying "in consequence" * It is not for tomorrow or the day after, but I think in predictable horizon between 3 to 9 years. I haven't said "high priority task" however would be good to have a scenario if partners would demand to set this as priority task or would try to promote completely incompatible solutions. * The question is if Jolla has remembered in licensing and agreements/contracts to secure its interests in case of such scenario to become reality soon??
