My jolla stopped working, why?

Today my Jolla was happily working and after leaving it alone I found it dead on the kitchen table. Nothing moved. I took out the battery (as usual if it acted up), cleaned and moved the contacts, put the battery back, press the on-switch.
"Brrrr" did the vibrator, the Jolla sign appeared, then went black, then the led went white, so that looked good, but then it just went black again. Re-pressing the button doesn't work, I have to remove the battery, place it back, and then I can try to start the phone again.
If I put the charger cable in (I tried another charger and cable, same effect) the charging symbol appeared on the screen, then went off and the white led went on.
First for a while only, but after a few rinse & repeats (battery out, back in, charger back in) the led kept on. And lo and behold, it even after some more time started blinking in the characteristic way as to indicate a full battery. Funny thing however, and maybe a sign?, is that the phone didn't become warm at all during charging, contradictory to my previous experiences.
Anyway, when I switch the phone on it keeps showing the same behavior: upstart sequence 'Jolla text on screen' -> black screen -> glowing white led -> dead.

What do you think happened? Is it the battery, or is it the phone?

I forgot to mention that I already have replaced the original battery with a "Replacement For HTC BOPA2100/DESIRE 310" of 3.8 VDC, 2100 mAh, 7.98Wh (Powery).

By the way, I think it's time to buy a new one, because it's already quite old (although still working to my satisfaction): Mfg. date 2014, Model: JP-1301.
Are the Intex Aqua Fish offers on ebay meaningful? I see a lot of negative feedback at the sellers.

It's has happend a couple of times both with my n9 and jPhone1 when the battary dies. It's the phone. Not the battary. Sometimes you even need recovery mode to boot.

@Dave999 How do I boot recovery mode if it doesn't even boot? How did you solve those 'couple of times'?

@arie_jolla - in case you have to recover the device; see here for using recovery mode; https://jolla.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/204709607-Jolla-Phone-How-to-use-Recovery-Mode

You could try to wait until battary is dead again and try to recharge again. But I don't use my jolla more than to check some updates, so for me me reset device is no issue(Just a bit annoying) , but if you have a complete set up as your daily driver you just want to try some other things first. :D

@fmotl Thanks, that's very helpful. I've gambled that it's the battery so I just ordered a new one for EUR 17.99 due tomorrow. Even if it is the phone, I can either try to boot it in recovery mode, and if that doesn't work I'm quite sure I will want a new Jolla. My current battery also wasn't too good anymore, so I'll always have use for the new battery. Although after reading your link it looks as if recovery mode reboot may be needed. Your link says that one should only do that if the Jolla Service Representative tells me to do that. I"ll look for their email address (info@jolla.com?).

The answer was to Reset the device in Recovery Mode as suggested by Dave999 and fmotl.
Luckily I had made a backup 2 weeks ago, and have not added too much, which was recovered with making backups of single files during Recovery Mode.
Apparently it wasn't a heat issue.

I have encountered a battery drain for two times now, which kind of resembles the symptoms you describe. When the phone is too hot, the battery won't charge and instead will try and fail over and over again. When the phone is still responsive the charging symbol switches between charging and low battery back and forth.

When I switch it off completely and put it in the fridge for 10..15min I am able to charge the battery afterwards and resume normal operation. I'm not saying that this is the exact problem you are describing, it just sound a bit like it, especially because I don't have a Jolla phone, only SailfishOS running on another one.

Also note that the fridge suggestion bears the risk of humid air condensing to water droplets inside your device, so you should decide for yourself whether you want to try that.

You should also check which apps and devices are active in these situations and whether you might have a weak carrier signal which could contribute to higher power consumption.
