While you charge the phone that is powered down, it shows the charging symbol at the screen. I've tried this several times..you cannot power pn it while it's shut off and it's connected to charger that is plugged to the current.

Yes, I have seen that too. The typical case where I need to do this is if I have completely emptied the battery, but need to use the phone! To start the phone some energy is required, so it has to be on the charger ...

Just tried this:

I couldn't turn it on while the initial charging symbol was showing, but could turn it on when it had changed to the charging with percentage was showing.

If my Nokia N9 fully discharges while running, when I plug it into a charger after a few seconds it starts itself, without me having to actively turn it on (All I have to do is enter the pin). The Jolla just charges

I have just seen this issue myself this morning (phone completely discharged at night). It's been charging for a while, but I'm unable to turn it on.

The topic of the question is a bit misleading, since just today I turned my Jolla on when it was charging. But yes, I had once too drained my battery so empty that the device didn't turn on despite of being plugged in to charger.

The issue that the phone won't turn on with empty battery is well explained and discussed eg. here: https://together.jolla.com/question/13021/the-phone-will-not-stay-on-with-a-flat-battery-even-with-charger-connected/

This issue happened when I had turned off the phone during the night and wanted to turn it on at morning as it was fully charged, but still plugged to the wall. No luck. The icon showing 100% charged battery showed at the screen but it was not possible to turn it on by pressing the power button few seconds.

In that situation, does the charging display still turn off automatically or by pressing the power button shortly? I'm thinking if the charging mode could somehow "crash" so it wouldn't react to anything. I've always been able to boot the phone, but I'll report here if I have this problem.

I fought with this also at first but there seems to be some strange logic with this. When phone is off and charging, pressing power-button long just shuts it down again so I am guessing it is in some kind of standy-by mode. And if I only click power it toggles screen on and off. For couple of tries I got the phone started by pressing power until jolla-logo shows while charging notification is on. If that won't make sense here is walkthrough: charge notif. on -> press power until jolla-logo lights up -> release power and phone starts up. If you press power until vibrate, phone will shut off and go back to charging mode. This seems to be the logic with my piece anyway. IMO too difficult, would be better if phone would react "normally" when off and charging.

This is the "act dead" mode, for which logic is inherited from Nokia N9, N900, etc

It is used when the device has been powered off, but still needs to be on to deal with:

  • clock alarms
  • charging

Once the charger is disconnected and there are no more alarms due in 2 minutes, the device will automatically power off again.

Nowadays powering up from act dead is not allowed until sufficient charging level is reached.

There is also fix coming up for not shutting down due to empty battery if charger is connected.
