If you are new here and want to learn more about polling here in Together, see this first: https://together.jolla.com/question/16697/together-howto-polling-in-together/

UPDATE!

The Other Half contest for Other Half Option 8 Contestant has ended and the winner chosen by Marc Dillon (@Marc) is:

@mgbler

with Ambience Light The Other Half idea!

Ambience Light TOH: Integrated fiberglass combined with LED so that the whole TOH or parts of it glow in adjustable colors. Could also be used as WakeUp Light

@mgbler 'sAmbience Light TOH idea is also available for voting in here: Poll: The Other Half of Dreams!: https://together.jolla.com/question/17129/poll-the-other-half-of-your-dreams/ as the last option number eight!

Thank you for everyone in participating! Let's keep doing this Together!

Okay, as said in Poll: The Other Half of Dreams!: https://together.jolla.com/question/17129/poll-the-other-half-of-your-dreams/

there will be an option "number eight" Other Half which is currently missing. Meaning of this temporary poll here is set up to decide the last contestant aka option number eight.

One Other Half idea is selected among Together users as a "Together users favourite". Remember that the "Together users favourite" can be also "unrealistic" Other Half so use your imagination.

There will be an answer box "Together users favourite" where users can submit suggestions for "Together users favourite other half".

It has been confirmed by @eric that the head of Jolla SW development, Marc Dillon himself is choosing the "Together users favourite" Other Half so its time to bring on some good ideas for "The Ultimate Other Half".

@Marc said below: "Please keep them coming! This is getting exciting. Thank you all for your contributions and lets really show the world where innovation in mobile comes from, people like you!"

Slightly extended deadline :)

The deadline is now set! Last chance to post your entry by Thursday 6.02.2014 till 23:59 EEST.

I believe the time to make suggestions has now ended. Let's give @Marc the time he will need to choose his favourite and wait for the announcement of winner later!

Marc Dillon @Marc will announce his selection on Friday 7.02.2014

"Together users favourite" is also awarded a "special recognition", seen later in "Poll: The Other half of dreams!"

The Other Half Option 8 Contestant competition has ended. The winner is @mgbler with Ambience Light TOH idea!

Use comment box under answer "Together users favourite" to submit your suggestions.

PS. original idea was that the contest would be to choose one "option 8" from four different contestants, but according to the "change of plans" only one contestant/ final option 8 is chosen by Marc Dillon from Together users suggestions.

Thanks.

I must have missed something. What is this option number eight you're mentioning?

Tanghus ( 2014-01-20 23:54:47 +0200 )edit

@Tanghus you can also submit proposal for "Together users candidate" using the comment box if you like.

@TimTTK I should have followed the link :P Thanks.

@TimTTK: thanks for your suggestion but I'd rather not be partial upon selecting myself one of the proposals ;) Some good ideas are emerging very nicely! I think it's important to keep it as realistic as possible but hey, it's The Other Half of your dreams after all :D

Well now, what a fantastic set of stuff.

Here we go:
First, yp's Bluetooth speakers "SailDok" is my favorite overall, but its not a TOH. So…
I love the NAS idea of TimTTK, but we don't seem to really have the HW for that at the moment…
The crank idea was a favorite, but the capacity -vs- size of the crank might be challenging.
I love the Fisrt Aid/Medical OH from gordon_pcb_designer, but it is an idea we have had a long time. I am engaged to a diabetic, so there could be a lot of benefit here.

The one I would order (other than the keyboard, many of us want that), based on the TOH spirit and the "why didn't I think of that" would be the Ambience Light TOH/WakeUp Light.

So, I pick @mgbler, my pipo is off to you.

Ambience Light TOH: Integrated fiberglass combined with LED so that the whole TOH or parts of it glow in adjustable colors. Could also be used as WakeUp Light

Awesome contest people, everyone deserves a hug for participating. I would like to talk even more, but sorry it is a long long day here.

Talk to you soon <3

"Together users favourite" Use comments in this answer to suggest your favourite "Ultimate Other Half!" It has been confirmed that this "Together users favourite" Other Half is chosen by head of Jolla SW development, Marc Dillon himself.

Some randomly chosen good OH ideas from Poll: The Other Half of your Dreams! are also brought here to get to be as part of this "Together users voting" too. If you don't like your idea to be part of this voting, feel free to delete it from the list.

Thanks.

give suggestions here on that what would be your favourite other half. Suggestion can be also "unrealistic" so no pressure even if it cannot be actually manufactured ;)

"can be also "unrealistic": Slideable OLED TOH: OLED on both sides, one side with a very responsive 6 fingers keyboard over the full size with fully transparent but non-flat surface to give a tactile indication for the borders of the individual keys (on request, i.e. screen may also be used for other purposes, when no keyboard is required -- I expect that an OLED keyboard would be thinner than a mechanical one). Of course, combined with a wireless charger and a "liquid" battery that fills all space left due to design restrictions. ("Liquid" battery, i.e. one that can be produced to fit into any form and does not need to be a compact cuboid.) Of course, the keyboard should also give tactile feedback for hits, e.g. via vibration.

PS: 10 finger typing would be preferred, but will not be possible with the Jolla size.

Foldable OLED TOH -- up to A4 size (or even larger). (That's what I am dreaming for notebooks for a long time already: Folding out the monitor several times and having an A2 (or larger) size monitor with probably 20 Megapixels at least.)

@wirew0rm Says: "DIY-TOH for makers would be nice :-) simplest implementation would be just a spacious TOH with stable contacts to i2c, interrupt and power. a little bit fancier could include a pcb, maybe some arduino and power supply on it, this would also protect the phone at least a little bit."

TimTTK ( 2014-01-21 10:37:46 +0200 )edit

Definitely an OLED or eInk OH, depending on what could be best implemented in terms of compatibility with Sailfish. My preference is eInk since I think it could bring additional features and functions to the Jolla (if main LCD screen can be kept off while using the eInk one), but otherwise OLED.

@Artem Says: "Travel-oriented otherhalf that I would put on when leaving for airport. Ideal combo would be extra battery, 2nd SIM card slot, eInk display for boarding pass and/or reading books, ebook reader, offline maps/navigation apps bundled in, maybe a better lens/microphone for travel photo/video."

TimTTK ( 2014-01-21 11:44:41 +0200 )edit

@jgr, Slideable OLED TOH (unfortunately, I cannot edit my post any longer): Whether OLED or eInk, something that preserves power. The keyboard would need to be pressure sensitive (nonetheless: no mechanical parts), not just touch sensitve (because you keep your fingers on the keyboard).

High-performance camera with at least 5x optical zoom, a wide aperture lens and a large sensor, possibly with embedded image processing capabilities to obtain lower pixel count images with lower noise through downsampling like the Nokia 808. The hard part is transferring the image data to the main half in a decent time.

my ultimate TOH would be a "dock"(for everyday use but also travel):miniHDMI output, gpu chip if need,USB 3.0 host with 2-4 ports,SDXC reader (for camera),dual sim, microusb power in (for the extra power needed eg.for external usb drive),fold-out support to make jolla stand up (like the surface pro 2)

TOH for outdoor sports. New sensors like thermometer, barometer and altimeter and additional battery capacity. All this combined for example to MeeRun to collect and store data. It goes without saying that also a rugged casing is needed, preferably one with optional bicycle mounting.

I want a docking bay TOH with battery charging and plugs for connecting to external audio devices (yes, I know I could just use the 3,5mm plug on top of the phone but the point is being able to just unplug the phone from the bay without detaching any cables).

In an ideal world this could also allow external keyboard, mouse, storage devices and display but, especially the display, seems unlikely, based on this: https://together.jolla.com/question/2353/theotherhalf-i-want-desktop-dock-otherhalf-external-display-keyboard-mice-audio-charger-etc/

In an ideal world, a projector TOH would be nice too but I suppose it is equally impossible as the external display, and for exactly the same reason.

As a third option, I would love to see a sports TOH that would allow (wired/BT) bio-monitoring equipment to be connected to it (heart rate, body temperature etc) with data recording etc. Be afraid, Suunto, be very afraid!

A Steambox other half which also slides into a Moga Gamepad type other other half when you do not have it docked to a vidock. Has 2 lrg mem cards to seperate mobile and Steam games. TOOH slides over that and can be moga or Jolla made. Inlay a line of glowpaint where other half meets. Port steam app.

Eink display that has wysips and LiFi. Wysips charges phone & provides fast LiFi connection and becomes part of mesh networking app like Open Garden that is cross platform. Sailfish version of app is integrated with KDE connect app. Yeah Linux! Eink displays performance, charging strength, etc..

aironeousb ( 2014-01-21 14:36:05 +0200 )edit

A steampunk other half that a sensordrone can slide into and act as a kickstand. TOH has all kinds of tiny tubes and valves but really has a few additional sensors in it like CO2. Port sensordrone apps to Sailfish, data is accessible by KDE connect.

aironeousb ( 2014-01-21 14:41:43 +0200 )edit

A custom wood OH half with inlays that comes with a liquipel treatment for phone + TOH. Could be company logo that glows inlaid with transparent inlace plus glow powder from glowpaint to the color of your preference. Use purple heart wood, it is so hard you can mill tiny details in it.

aironeousb ( 2014-01-21 15:07:59 +0200 )edit

Can you please increase the character length allowed for this? You're asking us to convince you on our other half ideas and then you Twitter cut our "sales pitch," it is quite annoying. How am I supposed to form the picture in your head. It's like, "convince me you're handsome in 20 seconds. Go!"

A simple standard all-plastic TOH to be mounted on standard tripods just like any other camera. Snap on this tripod TOH, enter camera mode and start streaming or filling up your 64GB card with nice and stable images. I'd love that! :D

@Amelot Says: The Other Half that I would like to build ? Remember the film the Matrix, the Nokia 8110 ? What if your Jolla opened up like that on both the top and bottom ? There obviously certain issues to work out like does it answer directly, or is there a window so you can screen your calls. Push a button and the sliders open from the the middle and shalck! It seems to me that the mechanics would need to be on the back side to move the covers. To keep it simple just a cover for the lens on the back as well. The other issue I see with this is not to inhibit the use of the swipe from the bottom an top edge. The screen is not at the edge of the top or bottom, regardless this would have to be taken into account in the design. Otherwise when open it would be twice as long as normal, and would also be slightly thicker.

@jgr: apologies for the formatting. My main concern was to get all the content initially posted as an answer and the formatting got lost in the way. A rubber TOH with magnets inside so you can put the Jolla everywhere you need it, be it the fridge or in your car or....

An TOH that functions as a protective cover for the phone, such as the one mentioned here: http://forum.jollausers.com/jolla-phone/jolla-accessories/

The protective cover would have an integrated oled display (e.g. showing the clock and event icons, and an additional high capacity battery built-in.

TOH with a Music Visualiser providing various visualisation effects. Including a SquareWear 2.0 Arduino Board should provide more functionality e.g temperature sensor. TOH color can change based on the ambient temperature.

Ambience Light TOH: Integrated fiberglass combined with LED so that the whole TOH or parts of it glow in adjustable colors. Could also be used as WakeUp Light (*)

@mgbler awsome, I really like the wakeup light idea!

Extension with USB dongle that can be hidden flat in the case, taken out if necessary, connected to laptop or PC and used to boot PC/laptop from phone - or, to put it other way, boot the phone through PC, use its system, write documents, browse internet etc.

@Richie Cotton Says: Pocket NAS Other Half

An other half with two (or, even better, four) full size SD card slots and RAID support.

NAS boxes are great for sharing files between all the devices in your house or office. The problem is that they are too big to be portable. Having NAS built into your phone means that you can take it anywhere.

SD cards currently range up to 128GB capacity, allowing 384GB from four cards using RAID 5 (or 512GB without RAID).

A great use case would be streaming movies from your phone when you visit a friend's house.

I'd like a cover with integrated touch pen.

can be also "unrealistic" Other Halfcan be "not yet realistic" Other Half → Nokia's almost six year old "The Morph Concept" (YouTube video) would be really nice, :-D
but I'd settle for a larger fold-out screen, to begin with, similar to @jgr's suggestion (3rd comment from top) above.

Other Half with connectors for regular AA (or AAA) batteries. Yes, it will be bulkier, but this Other Half will mainly be for "desperate" situations (or, say, as an emergency option when trekking).

Optional: Built-in solar charger for those batteries.
(Could even be combined with @Flight406's handle-crancked dynamo. :-) )

Hi, today I tought about one thing that really excited me... We need to revert the ambience and TOH relation, I mean, the current availabe TOH changes the ambience, but we need a "transparent" led powered TOH that changes when we change the ambience!!! Unlimited personatlization :D. Can you imagine?

What about TOH with a vibration transducer able to convert vibrations into energy to recharge the battery? Especially cool for runners who could listen to their favourite music without any concern (@phle would appreciate this :) )

Gianluca ( 2014-02-02 19:44:33 +0200 )edit

@Gianluca - Hm, yes, if it's possible to output enough to charge the battery, then why not?
Either as a separate TOH,
or bundled with the above "emergency TOH" (AA/AAA batteries, solar charger, and handle-crancked dynamo). :-)

TOH with a 15cm usb cable that you can pull out when needed, and an extra battery. It could add 6mm to the thickness and fit a 3Ah battery and the cable. The cable is permanently connected

Although I must admit that it's not very exciting compared to the awesome ideas above, my number one TOH would at the very least have a 2nd SIM slot. Maybe as some sort of 'Business TOH', which in addition to a SIM holds sensitive data, access credentials, perhaps also a micro-SD slot, ...? This allows you to truly leave work at work, or personal things at home when you go out drinking/hiking/traveling/rafting/chooseanyactivityofyourlikingwhereyourphonemightbelostorstolen.

martti ( 2014-02-04 20:22:29 +0200 )edit

TOH with flip-cover to protect the screen when not used. The flap would be permanently attached to TOH and it should come over either from top or bottom so both left- and righthanded can use the phone with this TOH.

avhakola ( 2014-02-05 04:41:38 +0200 )edit

TOH with small (or big) LED VU reacting to surrounding sounds. Either use those oldschool barleds or make a small (O)LED screen to draw the bars on.

this suggestion is late to the game, but here we go:

An Extended Other Half:

This Other Half is approximately the same height as a regular Other Half, but three times as wide (about an A5 in total). The leftmost third contains an extendable "sleigh", and the middle and right thirds are covered with one square-ish screen, internal necessary electronics, external buttons and connectors, and necessary extended battery.

Pull out the "sleigh", attach your Jolla, and put the "sleigh" back in (there will need to be some sort of "lock", to prevent the first half Jolla to "slip out" by itself). When it has clicked into place, it reboots (if your Jolla was on (probably with some sort of remorse-timed question - reboot/leave on/turn off); otherwise you'll need to power The Extended Other Half on, using the Extended Other Half's power button).
You now have a "tablet of sorts"!
Yes, the bezel from the first half Jolla will be visible, but The Extended Other Half's software could either take advantage of it (operate it from the first half Jolla, and show things on the square rightmost-two-thirds), or there could be a sort of prism built-in giving the illusion of a continouous screen (but would probably lead to a rather narrow viewing angle - might be useful for viewing films, though).

It will probably need some sort of built-in kick-stand, and (preferably) stereo-speakers, USB-port(s?), and SD-card-reader, and extra internal RAM, as well.

(Why a "sleigh"? Because it otherwise will be too tricky to remove the first half Jolla, or (not being fastened god enough) too much of a risk that the first half Jolla will fall off.
An option would be to have a Halfway Half for the first Jolla, with all necessary connectors, that you then put together with the rest of the screen (the Extended Half's), and then click-on one unifying Other Half covering the whole back of the first Jolla together with the Extended Other Half, but electronics-wise, I think the "sleigh" is better (and no risk of accidentally losing the Halfway Half, and ending up with useless electronics needing spare parts).)
