Tracker free browsing on Xperia X

Hi All,

On my computer I use firefox with the most restrictive settings together with the ublock origin plug-in. This allows me to block a lot of trackers, unwanted ads, 3rd party scripts and other privacy invading apparatus. When surfing the web.

On my Sailfish Xperia X I only use native jolla apps and stay as far as possible away from google/android. As a consequence I need to use the websites of certain service (e.g. public transport, radio listening, bank etc.), when there is no app available. Most of the websites today are bloated with all kind of trackers and I am trying to find out how I can surf more safely with Sailfish X. All tips are welcome!

how about "Hosts Adblock", have a look at open-repos / storeman

As a stop gag measure until Jolla upgrades their native browser to a newer version of the Mozilla Gecko engine that does supports web-extensions :

  • you might try to look into using a proxy (e.g.: Privoxy is a proxy that is designed for filtering purpose).

Note: For jolla's default browser, you might need to fumble around with "about:config".

Another solution is "WebPirate" native pbrowser which DOES have a built-in AdBlocker.

I use the Brave browser on Sailfish X and it does work well, but it does need Android support of course so it may not be suitable for you. There is lots of source code available including for the iOS and Android browsers, so it might be possible to produce a native SFOS version.

Why cannot you use the private browsing option of the Sailfish browser?

Hi Leszek, thanks for the tip. Looks good and I will try it. I always wonder where these kind of apps get their updates from. Who decides and manages what server is on the black list or not. Looks like a very labor intensive job. Anyway it makes surfing the web a bit safer and less annoying. Good tip thanks. And by the way interesting youtube channel you have. Checked already some other video's from you.

By the way, is defender (https://openrepos.net/content/nodevel/defender) a newer version of host adblock ? (mentioned by moo-crumpus)

Leszek, as you seem to know a lot about the sailfish OS, do you perhaps have any other tips to secure your phone when connected to the web?
