Should I buy Sony Xperia XA2 Dual Sim now?

Hello,

unfortunately my Jolla 1 after 1 normal reboot stopped working two days ago- complete dead :/

My question is: if I buy now a "Sony Xperia XA2 Dual Sim" ( H4113 ) how sure will it be that it will become supported officially by Jolla and I will be able to buy an official ROM - with android support too - in 3Q of 2018 (until September?) ?

I see also results like "Xperia XA2 ultra 4G" , "Xperia XA2 Single Sim", "Xperia XA2 ultra Dual 32Gb", "Xperia XA2 ultra Dual 64Gb" will these be supported too ?

Which one of these will be supported first ?

Also, if I will buy it, how can I check that it has open bootloader or whatever else needed to flash Sailfish on it when it will be ready?

Shops give a 7 days return and money back policy, I can't wait 3 - 4 months after the Sailfish will be ready to check.

Have you considered buying an Xperia X which is more powerful than the XA2, it's cheaper and in the dual SIM variant also offers twice the storage, in addition to being available now?

I have considered, yes, but I can't find it anymore in the shops in my country, and also I would like to go for XA2.

@nas: You also can buy it. Unlock it and install a custom rom until SF3 will be relased.

@makarch : Do you have a link of where I can find a custom ROM for XA2 ? As I see here: link text There isn't any yet for XA2, otherwise I wouldn't think about. Even without android I could still used it.

The simple answer is: No, nobody can say. And: Jolla wont tell, because better say nothing then something wrong. Thats at least the experience with the Xperia X.

Like every time Jolla didnt gave an exact date for the release. It will be announced shortly before it will be released. In my feeling, Jolla wasnt far away from the long term announced time-frames, but nearly never get it in time. So my bet is, they will tell us it will be released in november at the beginning of september.

If you can wait, wait. If not buy the Xperia X.

For unlocking the bootloader you should find an instruction on Sony's website.

@nas: waiting is a good idea. On the other hand if my Jolla 1 breaks I'll buy a used X and the Sailfish OS.

In short: No. Long story (some peoples may not like this - sorry):

There's no reason of going with the latest phone from Sony because Sailfish won't be able to use it's full functionality at all. The problem is Sony itself and their policy against Open Device. There's a webpage on which you can find out if the phone you're trying to buy is supported and on that webpage you'll also find what you'll lose when you'll install 3rd party OS. The most important things are usually camera, screen and sometimes sensors. Officially those are limited by the DRM keys that are stored on the TA which you'll lose once you'll install 3rd party OS. Without those (again) officially, you can't have that functionality.

Based on the above, when you compare Xperia X vs Xperia XA2 there's not much difference in HW. Even that Xperia X has got enabled 20MP mode for camera while XA2 is only 17MP. I know, that's a lot and probably not needed but consider that Sailfish still can't make good pictures is something I'd definitively didn't want to sacrifice more.

In the end, it's your choice what you'll pick up but personally I'd get second hand Xperia.

Last thing, whatever you'll do, just keep in mind to make a backup of your TA before you'll unlock your bootlader and store the keys in some safe place (best is in few places). Just in case you'd want to sell this device, to be able to fully restore the OS.

thank you for your answer lolek, a full backup of the phone, including any DRM keys is one of my concerns. I am kind of afraid to buy an used xperia X, and even loose these money if I am not able to flash Sailfish on it.

Installing SFOS isn't a big prob. The question is if you'll buy SFOS or use the community one. IF the second then forget already about SFOS. The version available is 2.1.3.7 (or something like this) and you won't be able to update. So to get the 2.2.x you have to get paid version. Of course then you'll notice that the camera is bad (well you had Jolla 1 so considering the comments that I saw maybe it can't be worse?), you can put a call onto the speaker, as it's not working (at least in 2.1.3.7 and I didn't saw any fix related to it) and no it's not a low volume problem, it's just the speaker isn't switched. Regarding Xperia X for sale, where are you from?

Well... I think that changed since this year about the DRM keys, a lot of people from XDA reported that after unlocking the bootloader, doesn't affect anymore the camera quality using stock rom. Only appears the horrible message on boot and OTA won't work anymore. I think that we should wait until Sailfish 3 for Xperia XA2 is release to know if the situation that had Xperia X have been improved for XA2. Hope that yes, as mine is waiting for Sailfish :)

@carmeloferso well if you want to belive in that it's your choice, but official Sony information doesn't lie. Here,@aQUICK1 posted links to the solution for obtaining full camera res without DRM keys. But I don't think think it's valid from the license point of view so don't think that Jolla can use this hack.
