Creating keymaps + hardware keymap switch for two languages

Dear Sailors,

I need to use five languages in my daily work, so I am used to 2 keyboard layouts that I use all day long. These are german and serbian/croatian/slovenian for which until now there is no virtual keymap (which would work for all latin keymaps for Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, too), no hardware keymap and no translation for serbian.

Implementing a hardware keymap switch would be great. I remember the Blackberry Passport, which allowed to switch languages pretty fast. One only needed to choose up to three languages in the settings and during typing one could switch easily with a long keypress. My guess is, that Alt-Shift as on Windows would be great to have fast switching between layout for hardware keyboards or even the tohkbd. This would be a kind of generic solution for users who want to communicate with different languages and layouts.

I would like to work on this but I would need a bit of introduction, how keymaps are generated and how keys are linked to characters. When I understand this, I would do the rest to implement it for a further update.

Thank you for your time and attention!

Cheers Dejan

  • Choose keyboard layouts in the settings app.

  • Longpress the [space] key to change virtual keyboard.

I use more than one layout (plus emoji) on a daily basis. You should be able to do that too.

There seems to be a group of people creating keyboard layouts with or without presage word prediction at OpenRepos.net.

There seems to be (now unmaintained) serbian keyboards (both cyrillic and latin) at OpenRepos.

Should be possible to combine those.

A community-based serbian translation is possible and should be handled by a group, imho. With swift work the translation could be included with the next version of Sailfish OS.

Hi Vattu,

thanks for your quick answer. What I want, is to be able to use a hardware-keyboard and switch the language with it. I have a TOHKBD and this would be the fix for it - and I guess for the Gemini PDA, too.

First I would make the layout for Ex-YU countries so that it is usable. Then I would implement it as hardware-layout and in a third step as a layout for TOHKBD.

By the way, how can I send private messages here or on translation.jolla.com?

There are no private messages here at TJC.
