Flash SailfishOSX - Sony vendor binary images versions

Jolla's flash instructions for Xperia X and Xperia X Compact (Loire) use the Sony vendor binary image version SW_binaries_for_Xperia_AOSP_M_MR1_3.10_v13_loire, which corresponds to Marshmallow 6.0.1 with Kernel 3.1. For the "Loire" hardware line, Sony offers several newer versions. The latest version of Software binaries for AOSP is Oreo (Android 8.1) - Kernel 4.4 - Loire.

Can we also use this for flashing, if not, couldn't Jolla adapt SailfishOS? Did that make a difference at all?

ASOP binaries are kernel bound so using binaries compiled for newer kernel versions will not work and break your device.

I thought the kernel was part of those ASOP binaries, while SailfishOS is a level above. Am I wrong?
