How test the new NFC feature on XA2

For Sailfish OS 3.0.3.9 NFC support is announced. The release notes state it is preliminary, whatever that means. I'm curious how to test and use this feature with my Xperia XA2. The first try with installing an Android app called NFC-Tools failed. It displays an error message, that it can't find a NFC device. Are there any working Android apps or better yet, native apps?

Any thoughts?

Regards

The current NFC implementation supports only NFC tags that contain an URL (according to this blog post).

So to test this new feature you have to

  1. Turn on the NFC in the settings
  2. Hold the back side of your Sony Xperia XA2 on an NFC URL tag
  3. Result: A dialog will be shown and asks you if you like to open the detected URL

I successfully tested this with an NFC tag and it is working as expected. :)

I have a URL-tag too, and can't get it to work. Care to share the config of yours?

@attah Well, how do I get the config of the NFC tag?

@Alex I don't know if this is the best method... but i used the NXP TagWriter app on a Android device i have for work. So when i read the tag with that it says "Type MIFARE Tag" and "716 bytes". If i go to edit dataset and press the pen in the content field, i can see that the tag's optional title is left blank, the type is "http://www" and then the rest of the address. Any info on what constitutes a supported tag is appreciated. Also it just occurred to me i haven't tried this on Sailfish, i just assumed it won't work, and Yalp store is borked right now so i can't test.

I just tried a sigma bc 14.16 bike computer with Xperia 10 with 3.3.0.16 - the url of the device is shown in Sailfish - thats a start. Android NFC app does not recognize any NFC hardware further.

I tried with 2 type of old NFC tags, written with Nokia N9 Tag Writer app, and the XA2 Plus is not working. As backup I downloaded the Android app NFC tool, but I get an error like NO NFC :-(

One more time, the N9 from 2011 was better... Hoping that Jolla will fix / implement for real the NFC in next update!

Is NFC supposed to show a dialog or something even if its not a URL in the tag or something. Tested a device with a debit card and while it vibrated it shows no dialog.

Is this normal???

As far as I understood, the more complicated protocols are not supported at this time. I tried with other device, got vibration and also some nfc activity logged. But nothing in terms of dialogs or similar
