Using the backup created on my old Intex Aquafish (SFOS2) for moving on to a new XperiaXA2 (SFOS3) worked perfectly fine. So just give it a try. If something goes wrong, you can still do a factory reset.
Yesterday I created a backup on Xperia X and used it for my Xperia XA2 Plus, and it worked fine without problems.
Did exactly that.
Some things worked straight away.
Others were a bit buggy (I needed to delete and re-create a few email accounts).
Some things needed manual copy (e.g.: a few Native applications like SailOTP export/import backup manually, WhatsApp's database and backup can be rsync'd over (mind the per-App UID/GID), etc)
A few things outright cannot be moved (some Android Apps are linked to a phone's exact serial number/IMEI/etc. and will outright refuse to be started on the new phone and alert you of the change: Bank 2FA apps, other such security apps. Usually with a message similar to "this application has been restored from an old Backup from a different smartohone, please setup again")
Obviously your microSD card will need to be physically moved. :-P
