Hi,

I have a Xperia X Compact running Sailfish X thanks to @g7's compatibility layer. It has been working flawlessly for more than a year, including OTA updates and everything.

A few days ago, it ran out of battery and turned off. It was not the first time at all, but this time, I can't seem to charge it anymore. I haven't installed any new application between its last boot and the issue, nor did I update the OS. Nothing at all actually after the last successful boot.

When I plug it to a wall charger or to a USB cable plugged to a computer, I get a red blinking LED. Roughly one blink per second.

Following Sony's instructions, I have tried many things, including:

  • charging it for more than 10 hours in a row;
  • trying different chargers (that I know have been working in the past);
  • trying different cables (same);
  • holding the power button for up to 5 minutes (damn that was long);
  • holding the power button with the volume up button for up to 5 minutes;
  • same with the volume down button just in case.

No luck. Power + Volume Up should bring the recovery mode and a blue LED, but this is just not the case here.

Interestingly, after plugging it to a charger, the red blinking starts, and if I hold the power button for like 30 seconds, it will sometimes switch to a slow red blinking. From this state, if I then hold power + volume up, it will switch to an even slower red blinking with some sort of breathing effect (but not the charge breathing) and a simultaneous vibration, but still no charge. In this last mode, I can see the "Unlocked bootloader" warning for like one second every two cycles, but it doesn't last and seems to reboot immediately. Normally this screen would stay longer and then the phone would boot.

lsusb on my Linux computer does not list the phone in fast blinking. I cannot get to slow blinking when connected to a computer.

I have tried leaving the phone in all three modes for several hours in case one would allow charging, but no. The slow blinking only lasts a few minutes anyway.

Any ideas?

Reckon that it's time for a new battery unfortunately, although perhaps there were warning signs.

Not really, that's what is surprising to me. The battery life in normal use after one charge was still pretty close to what it used to be when I bought the phone.

I had a similar problem, and finally I solved it by replacing the usb connector. See my post here

And it is worth a try not plugging USB cable to the very bottom of the connector, and tilt it a bit if it is possible, just in case the connector is worn out. I recovered one device with a micro-USB that way, might work with USB-C too.

Thanks for the input. I could try that but what worries me is in your case, it was still possible to enter fastbood mode with Volume Up. It's not the case with my X Compact, which I'm afraid might point to a different issue. I'll see if I can order a USB-C connector just in case, but without much hope since it never showed signs of wear so far.

Still no luck after trying to tilt the USB socket, the contact seems to be perfect however I move the cable. But I still get just a red blinking. :<
