Magnetic usb loading cable

hi there,

the usb port for loading my Jolla1 is getting a bit old. The cable doesn't click that good and it falls off rather easily. So before something gets broken there i thought about buying one of these magnetic loading cables. Where you put an adapter into the usb - and can connect a magnetic cable to that adapter when needed.

So far i am not sure which one may fit - and also most i find seem to be rather big - meaning they aren't really flat and are standing out of the usb port quite much. At least it looks like that as you mostly don't see examples of them beeing inserted into a phone.

Long story short: is anyone using one of these adapters and could recommend one? Preferably quite small - so they don't stick out of the usb port that much.

I have two sets of 4smarts GRAVITYCords with microUSB and USB-C device end connectors.

Pros:

  • Works super well in the car! Single hand insert and pull to remove!
  • Protects the USB port from wear and tear
  • Protects the port from yanking the cable / the cable getting stuck at something
  • Very, very easy to insert!
  • Works fine with my Jolla Phone and Sony Xperia X
  • The adapter is quite hard to get out (should suite you well)
  • Transfers data, too (not all brands do)

Cons:

  • Price :(
  • The cable heats up a bit (the part that latches to the adapter)
  • Charging speed is slower with microUSB adapter than a good quality cable (but it prolongs the battery life!)
  • The USB-C adapter does start charging, but the current is very low (with XA2/XA2U) (can be a charger issue, too)
  • The tip does stick out (but is not that much of a problem with protective wallet/flipbook case)
  • Both the cable and the tip collect paper clips and other junk (not really a surprise!)
  • You're tied to the provided cables (by design, but still)

I'd rate the microUSB adapter 8/10 and the USB-C adapter 6/10 (I should re-evaluate them, though). The microUSB adapter that is inserted to the phone is reasonably sized, but for some reason the USB-C adapter is noticeably larger. Really sucks as I now have XA2 and XA2U as daily drivers. The cable is of high quality, I'd say. It's flexible and doesn't get stuck at things too easily, it doesn't turn or twist the phone by itself. The charging speed could be an issue, but not much with Jolla Phone, as it draws 500mA max anyway.

I'd say you can give this brand a try!

Fun fact: they actually list Jolla Phone as a supported model!

Then again; they also list XA2 models, too :)...

Actually, using a 2Amp capable charger, according to the Charge Monitor app, the Jolla phone seems to be a 1100mA design, and charging currents a little above 1000mA has been noted.

I used these ones on most of my devices and I am quite happy with them: https://www.floveme.com/collections/data-cable/products/magnetic-usb-cable-fast-charger-3a-data-transfer

They are about 4$ shipped on aliexpress (less.if you can wait for a sale).

I used a different style that looks identical to what Direc posted on my AquaFish previously and I cannot recommend those. They only worked in one orientation for data transfer (charging worked in either orientation) and most importantly they are not short circuit proof! If you make or break the connection at an angle, you can short the pins in the cable on the metal edge off the receptacle. The ones I currently use have neither of those problems.

However, the plug does protrude from the device as you mentioned, but personally I never had any issues with that (on my XA2 the TPU case covers about half of that overhang anyway).
