[XA2, Android8] Language switch for Android subsystem [answered]

I set up Andy on my XA2 in German (as I thought using native language on a mobile would be nice again). But then decided to switch again to English.

All system and native apps are now in English but most of the Android stuff keeps talking to me in German. I do not see any possibilty to switch the language for Android. Using microG and even that is still in German.

I found some method but that was for older (4.4) Android and did not work.

This one https://together.jolla.com/question/4536/why-are-all-my-android-apps-in-the-wrong-language/ should have been solved by a sw release? But I do not see how...

This one https://together.jolla.com/question/167243/how-to-android-locale-or-language-switch/ is not understandable...

And this one https://together.jolla.com/question/129080/jolla-tablet-android-support-language-problem/ is closest but could not find. Furthermore this seems to be known since years (and of course not solved)

As all rely on 4.1/4.4 and we have now 8.1. So probably another location to modify?

Any ideas/suggestions?

This should work:

  1. Go into "Settings -> Apps" and click on a random Android app

  2. Click on "Open Android settings". A window which says "Appinfo" should now appear.

  3. Click on "<" at the bottom to go back to the main Android settings menu.

  4. Scoll down and to into "Settings". Should be the last menu item.

  5. The item should say something like " Language and typing". Click on it.

  6. Click on "Language", add your language and drag it to the top.

  7. Click the tree dots at the upper right and press "Remove".

  8. Remove the old language and close the Android settings.

  9. Go into "Settings -> Android support" and stop and start the Android support.

Hope this works :)

Oh dear.
That's it!

That is just so Androidish and too easy :) (and me too dumb)
It worked exactly as you described.

Thank you.

I had three entries there in following order:
1. Deutsch (Deutschland)
2. English (Germany)
3. English (United States)

Re-ordering and restarting Android subsystem. Et voila.

is there a way to switch the language of a single app?

AFAIK no (which does not really mean anything :)

If the specific app does not support first listed language then it falls back to second (or third or ...) in the list.
