We have moved to a new Sailfish OS Forum. Please start new discussions there.

The exFAT format is proprietary and not supported by Sailfish OS. You need to format the card to ext4 to be usable with Sailfish OS. This can be done in Settings > Storage (long press on the SD card).
You will find further official information here: https://jolla.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/201997993-What-kind-of-SD-cards-and-formats-are-supported-Formatting-and-encrypting-a-card?mobile_site=true
You can use nearly any filesystem you wish on the sdcard, but I also recommend ext4. Windows won't recognise ext4 out of the box, but if you really need it, there are ext4 drivers for windows. Sailfish also support MTP, so it is possible to transfer e.g. music and pictures via USB-cable. I prefer ssh, but then again I don't use windows.

See here the long list of SD cards which you might want to avoid for compatibility reasons: https://together.jolla.com/question/169040/sailfishx-microsd-card-not-detected/?answer=176495
