I used to use Maps.Me on iOS and am using the Open Source version "Maps" on Android, and I would like to continue doing so under SFOS. (I looked at a few other apps, including native SFOS ones, but didn't like them.)

I did install it from F-Droid like I used to in Android, but when starting the first time, it tries to get the first map (on the third page), and fails, saying "Download has failed: Touch to try again."

All other Android apps are able to download stuff using WiFi, why not this one? The same version on an Android (LineageOS) device works nicely.

This is on a rather new install of SFOS 3.2.1.20 on an Xperia 10.

Thanks for the tip, I have installed that and am testing to see, if it works for me.

@Spark: consider converting your comment into an answer, given that pw338 is actually giving it a try.

@pw338 : not only does OSM Scout works with Pure Maps, but it can also serve maps to other compatible apps, like the Laufhelden sports tracker (useful when you do outdoors sports in the wild where internet connection is limited)

Not exactly a solution to the installation issue, but a nice alternative: Native Pure Maps in combination with OSM Scout Server is one of the finest apps available for Sailfish. You can find it through Storeman or here: https://openrepos.net/content/rinigus/pure-maps. Installation guide for offline maps also in the link.

Not sure if this is the right forum to ask for help with PureMaps / OSM Server. You were right, it is a nice system -- if it works. I like the night mode, and routing works great.

I I have downloaded all local maps (at least OSM Scout Server says that it has everything), but there are several locations where the display works, but just adjacent to it, there are regions where Pure Maps displays just empty nothingness. I posted an example screenshot to https://pasteboard.co/ITE4TMr.png (I hope you can see that).

The same screenshot shows the scale and speed at the top (well, with empty numbers in this case). Is it possible to increase the font size of those numbers?

What I liked about Maps(.Me) is that there one can download much smaller map parts. So that updates don't always download >1 GB (like the OSM Scout Server map for Germany).

I observed this for years on various devices (Jolla 1s, Xperia Xs) with SailfishOS (all versions from 2.2.1 to 3.2.1).
Actually, if you are extremely patient, one is able to download maps in "Maps" by hitting Retry many hundred times (IMO unusable even as a workaround). A much easier workaround is to copy the maps data files from an Android device onto your SailfishOS device.

All other Android apps are able to download stuff using WiFi, why not this one?

If you want to find out what "Maps" (and likely Maps.me, too) does differently than (apparently) any other Android app and why its downloads fail, start analysing it.
Observing these failures per logcat's log would be the usual first step.

With sufficient analysis to describe the issue technically, you might file a bug at "Maps" issue tracker (at Github, IIRC), then.

I am still too new to SFOS to start debugging stuff, but thanks for the hints.

But I now managed to copy the files and especially the "World.mwm" and "WorldCoasts.mwm" files to "android_storage/MapsWithMe" from an existing Android (LineageOS) installation. Afterwards it starts and displays the map. I can then even download new maps from inside it...

But I also noticed that zooming and panning inside the app is a bit flakey compared to real Android. Let's see...
