Hi, a new version of movim was released. Movim 0.17: Catalina https://linuxfr.org/news/movim-0-17-catalina (in french)

https://nl.movim.eu/?node/pubsub.movim.eu/Movim/87633da7-3963-4923-aabc-54ac5f6ad1d8 (in english).

What does this have to do with Sailfish? movim is xmpp chat (and social network), which is compatible with Telegram, Mattermost, slake, discord. By linking your different accounts with your movim account, you can receive messages from your different networks on the Sailfish "message" app (the sms app) and your contacts from different messages are added to the native application.

Is the "you can receive messages from your different networks in the Sailfish message app" part working or in case someone builds a native movim app?

@Spark, it's working now with no additional app. You just need to ceate a movim.eu account and link it with telegram (or other) and add your movim acount in sailfish as xmpp

@kayouxm how exactly can I do this? I can't even create an account on their website. When I try to make an account, it says "Invalid form The g-Recaptcha-response field is required."

If I manage to create it, what shall I do next?

@branja6 I have contacted the main dev of movim, sadly the creation of news account is down. He will fix that as soon as possible. I will warn when is fixed.

I have also made a little how to for configur Telegram and mattermost .

First : In movim, go to "configuration --> account" and clic Telegram transport https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2020/09/1/1582577560-capture-d-ecran-1.png

Second : select the account you want link https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2020/09/1/1582577591-telegram.png
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2020/09/1/1582577604-mattermost.png

After valid the notification

Finaly : in Sailfish creat a new xmpp account https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2020/09/1/1582577619-sfos.jpg

You should found your Telegram (or other) contact in sailfish contacts app and receive (or send) Telegram (or other) with your message app
For exemple this picture with telegram botfather https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2020/09/1/1582578411-sf2.jpg

I tried Movim some time ago, and I was amazed about it! The chat and integration worked very well on chat level! Extremely fast. The only flaw I found was that when I was using the web chat on movim.eu, the messages I wrote there were not appearing in my mobile... Still not sure where was the problem: protocol? Sailfish implementation? XMPP server? At least when I was chatting with someone in my mobile phone, my messages were appearing on movim platform. Unfortunately group chat as I read wasn't complete from sailfish side, and didn't work.

I tried to install movim on a development enviroment to have a closer look. The configuration took a while, but I didn't make it to configure properly ejabberd (if I remember right the name - the XMPP server). It needed some extra time which I didn't have.

What does this have to do with Sailfish? [..]

TL;DR: Nothing!

It is just advertising for some service in the web to give your "social" metadata (and maybe even content) to its provider in an aggregated way.

@olf You are harsh here, and while I fundamentally mostly agree, it helps those who don't run their own X-to-XMPP gateway. Movim allows SFOS users to connect via a built-in protocol (supported by the Messages app) to receive messages from a couple of other services, alleviating the need for Android apps to do this (think of community ports).

Please note that I don't advertise this, nor would I use this.

@olf I am not involved in any way in the movim project. Movim is an opensourced project and you can deploy your own instance for your personal use. I don't think they want your data but if you have clues teach me.

Why am I "advertising" this service here? because it seems to me that it can be interesting to receive Telegram, mattermost and xmpp messages from its differents contacts on the basic application of sailfish.

kayoux ( 2020-02-22 20:08:17 +0200 )edit

@Maus, are you seriously suggesting to rather use a Movim instance run by someone than a local Android app, as e.g. Conversations? I.e., to give all your social media account credentials to someone (AFAIU) in order to avoid running an (or multiple) Android app(s) inside SailfishOS' Android runtime environment / container ("AlienDalvik")?

I really fail to see a proper reasoning for this, except one is a strong post-privacy advocate.

@kayouix, I merely wrote "[Movim is] some service in the web to give [all] your "social" [...] data away", i.e. one has to put tremendous trust into the people running the Movim instance you are using. Yes, Movim's source code seems to be Free Software etc., but that makes no difference in this regard.

Agreed that this is O.K., if that is you (i.e., running an own instance) and you (or at least some independent party) took a sufficiently deep look at the source code to be convinced, that it handles your data fine.

The right landing page for this purpose is https://github.com/movim/movim

Still all this is completely unrelated to SailfishOS!

olf ( 2020-02-22 21:20:15 +0200 )edit

The relation with sailfishos is : it's a way to have slake or discorde on sailfish without Android app. it's a way to have your xmpp contact, telegram contact, mattermost contact ... in an single native app.

As for the confidence granted, it is of the same level as that which one grants to a mastodon or mattermoste instance or nextcloud instance. If you can't trust you can host your own.

kayoux ( 2020-02-22 22:00:20 +0200 )edit

@olf I see you found your use case, then. I would be seriously surprised if you read that I am advocating using Movim from what I wrote above.
