TOH from shapeways
Has anyone ordered TOH from Shapeways, or any other 3D printing service? Now that the 3D models are out, it should be quite easy to make your own TOHs. I would gladly hear any experiences about this.

Printed TOH from Shapeways has just arrived. I've ordered it in the Coral Red color from Strong & Flexible Plastic material. See some pictures here. If you are interested I can upload better pictures, since they are taken with Nexus 7 in bad light condition.
Good news - it fits quite OK, and given the material feeling it's not as much slippery as the original plastic cover. Not so good news - I've expected a better material. This one feels like a pressed paperboard and it feels it can scratched easily. Connection points inside TOH are probably somehow smaller so it's does not feel as strong attached as the original TOH. But it does not fall apart during normal usage.
25 Euro (including P&P) is too much. It feels like a 5 Euro cover bought at a marketplace. :-)
I ordered one from flypig @ Shapeways as well, as I have to agree with the main points.
I only bought it as something that I can use as a development TOH but the material really seems to let this down, good thing it takes zero effort to take the case on and off because otherwise it feels likely to snap. I think I will coat the back in thin fibreglass to give it a bit more rigidity
I'm going to investigate injection molding services to see what it will take to get something decent built. But otherwise I would really suggest increasing the thickness of both the back and sides of the print if using 3D printers to make a TOH.

melg01 ( 2014-02-04 22:31:26 +0200 )editI've just placed an order on shapeways using Jolla's official 3D model. Waiting for approval from shapeways if it's actually possible to print. There was a warning sign about model being very thin at some places - mainly around camera.
lomo ( 2014-02-05 13:38:50 +0200 )edit@lomo Let me know, how it'll work. I uploaded also the official 3D model to shapeways, but there were some things that got me suspicious. First, the camera flash hole, didn't seem to be through, but there was very thin layer on it. Second, I looked the measurements, and they weren't exactly what are the measurements in technical specs.
Janippi ( 2014-02-05 15:32:14 +0200 )editI'll post as soon as the shape will be accepted by Shapeways. The area around camera was very thin and it might not be possible to print TOH. I didn't verify the measurements - it might end up of getting an unusable piece of plastic for ~25EUR ;-)
lomo ( 2014-02-05 16:17:36 +0200 )editWhat material did you use?
