I sent a MMS picture to a friend with a Jolla phone. Picture is also taken with a Jolla. Received image is scaled from 3264x1840 down to 128x72 pixels. Which too small to be useful.

Edit: Added images after gaining enough karma

AFAIK, a lot of conversion can be done by the provider. To make things worse, providers may choose the conversion applied based on which handsets they believe are used. Unusual phones are likely to be treated as "unknown, so assume old and outdated hardware". (I faintly remember this was an issue with MMS on the Nokia N900.) This might explain different results with different phones on the same network - and with the same phone on different networks.

Jolla would also resize the image before sending it - most likely down to 1632x920, in order to squeeze the MMS PDU into 300k. The rest of the damage is done by the operator on the receiving side. Another problem is that they turn Exif files into plain JFIF, losing the orientation marker in the process. As I said earlier, we are working with DNA to resolve this issue. We should have done that before releasing MMS to the public, but we have discovered it too late. Sorry about it.

DNA MMS infrastructure is rescaling the images to a ridiculously small size. It's only a problem when Jolla is receiving an MMS on the DNA network. Sending works fine, other major Finnish operators don't seem to have such a problem at all. We are aware of this issue and working with DNA to fix it. Most likely, the fix will be on their side, you won't have to upgrade your phone.

  1. Sent MMS from Jolla to Jolla -> picture is 1088x816. (Sonera->Sonera)
  2. Sent MMS from iPhone to Jolla -> picture is 1024x768. (Saunalahti->Sonera)

Was the MMS sent within the same operator or between two different operators?

@JvD Does it happen also otherway around? From DNA to Tele Finland?

tigeli ( 2014-04-11 14:40:50 +0300 )edit

Doesn't seem to work at all other way at all. I may see a result within couple of next days. Maybe. Cases so far:

Jolla Tele -> Jolla DNA -> small Image

Jolla DNA -> Jolla Tele -> not received yet

Jolla Tele -> Iphone 5 Elisa -> 1088x613

Iphone 5 Elisa -> Jolla Tele -> 1088x613

Windows Phone Elisa (was DNA) -> Jolla Tele -> original resolution

JvD ( 2014-04-11 15:11:38 +0300 )edit

Jolla DNA -> Jolla Tele -> 920x1632

Some Symbian device some Russian operator -> Jolla Tele Finland -> 674x1200
