Word prediction enhancement proposal: word grouping; also some thoughts on word prediction in non english languages
I like the word prediction alot, but i think it would be nice if words would be grouped. Something like this:
I type in "som", predictions are: "som, some, something, dom, don, sometimes, sim, someone, ain, soon, dim, aim, somebody, dont, somehow"
I suppose this list is sorted by probability. What would be nice is if the words would be grouped like the following:
som:
- some
- something
- sometimes
- sim
- someone
- soon
- somebody
- somehow
dom
- don
- dim
- dont
ain
- aim
The words in the groups would be accessible via a popup like when switching languages (long touch on spacebar)
pro:
- Dont need to scroll all the way to the right to get to somehow (which can be alot of gestures just to get there)
- At least in Portraitmode there is more vertical space than horizontal, thus in these groups there could be more offered words
con:
- Wouldnt see those predictions until you long-touched one of the group headers... :/
Most of the time when i dont see the word right ahead in the prediction bar, I end up typing the whole word. Which kinda makes the word prediction a waste of vertical space rather than a helpful feature at the moment. This is also true for german though a whole different story, where the prefixes (ge- ver- un- etc.) and suffixes (-ung, -end -bar etc.) mess up the predictions. But subpar word prediction in non-english langs is to be expected i guess.
IMO this one con is a huge one. The main feature in prediction is writing often used words quicker. When you always group up words you always have to press long I suspect this is not really fast.
I think what is implemented now is in the average quicker than grouping what is only in some cases quicker and in the rest much slower.

i just timed myself transfering the last paragraph in my question, first using prediction.
by using prediction i mean that i typed the word until it was prominently visible in the predictions bar. the exact word, (when i want to type "word" i typed until i saw or finished typing "word". "words" would be close but i would have to press backspace twice and then spacebar. which would result in a 3 char longer word. kinda)
i got 3:20
next i transfered the exact same text character by character using two thumbs (because i always type like that) i ignored the predictions completely.
i got 2:22
now you could argue that i already memorized some of the text and got faster at the second time, but i dont think that would give me more than 5 seconds of a lead there. ok, lets say 10 seconds
