When you install a new system update for Sailfish OS you can select to do a backup before updating.

However I suspect that many average users just would skip this opportunity.

Therefore I request for a "Always do backup before updating" checkbox under the newly introduced "Updates for Sailfish OS" item which should be enabled by default.

If disk space consumption is an issue you could make an option to only keep the last 3-5 automatic backups (not touching user-made backups).

IMHO the possibility to choose backup is right, somebody sometimes does not want to backup his/her phone. Maybe only to add a warning in case of skipping this oportunity. Second, the ability to only keep the last 3-5 automatic backups (not touching user-made backups) is nice.

I agree with @Peter S. : make it slightly annoying to avoid the backup by popping up a warning on the consequences of skipping backups.
IMHO it is better if in the user's mind gets ingrained the idea to run a backup before major changes on any computing device, than to do everything automagically.
