How to reproduce:

  1. Set your display time-out to 10 minutes
  2. Use a SSH-connection and transfer some (big) files/ directories which should take some time
  3. Wait about 5 minutes (with aN active transfer) and try to swipe your homescreen or some other action
  4. You will notice that your UI won't respond (especially the first 5 seconds) and gets really laggy. Sometimes you will also experience the green LED blinking fast.

I am able to reproduce this every time with a Windows 8 and an OpenSuse computer.

are you copying files to the internal memory or the sdcard? if it's the latter how what class is the card and which filesystem? How big is big? > than 1GB? Depending on the FS and destination you may just be seeing 'normal' VFS caching behaviour

@steph No I am backing up my whole internal memory (about 6 Gb) and it's only happening after about 5 minutes. :)
