Which linux works best with Sailfish? [subjective]
Ubuntu 14.4, Knoppix 7.2, Suse 13.1 or Mint 17?
Ubuntu 14.4, Knoppix 7.2, Suse 13.1 or Mint 17?
Answering this question opens flame wars of what is best Linux distribution. So answer would be that they all work the same, ssh and usbnet works on all of them. Personally I use Ubuntu.
i use xubuntu because of xfce is light and it works great with my jolla
mvdm ( 2014-07-02 21:42:13 +0300 )Any Linux distro will work fine as long you have the skills to configure/install all necessary pieces correctly. The power of Linux is on your side.
I think you can even use alternative operating systems like Windows or MacOS with your Jolla.
Venty ( 2016-09-18 12:10:40 +0300 )MacOS? OK I have hackintosh on my laptop (dual boot with ubuntu on SSD) and once in 10 000 i use it's terminal too, But windows? Why the would you use Windows with linux machine?
As i said above i mostly use ubuntu on my notebook.
AnonUser10082 ( 2017-03-04 23:01:42 +0300 )I use openSuse 13.1 with Standard-KDE. With Filemanager Dolphin you can connect via WiFi or USB. With the Terminal you can get root access and/or use the midnight commander. Everything works fine, but I have less experiences with other distributiones. So in my opinion, you should use what is the best for you. ( I use suse since Version 4.4)

I use archLinux, and after installing libmtp and kio-mtp it works wonderfully in KDE (I also installed mtpfs if I want a low level mount)
It seems to me, that most people complaining on MTP are running Debian or some of its derivatives. So, choosing from the one you pointed, it would be SuSE.
BTW, I'm on plain Fedora 20, and MTP connection to Jolla Phone works out-of-box, no action needed.
smoku ( 2014-07-23 11:27:25 +0300 )I'm running debian testing with kde and after installing kio-mtp everything works great. As said before, ssh runs on all distros, so no winers here
dcase ( 2014-07-24 20:07:58 +0300 )A good distribution for Sailfish is the one wich suport KDE-connect. According to the link, nowadays these are Kubuntu, Fedora and OpenSuse.
with KDE Connect you can receive your phone notifications on your computer, or just use your phone as a remote control for your desktop.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkCFngNmsh0
The mobile app isn't native yet and Notification sync is no available using the android version.
kde-connect is for Android, and unless someone develops a replacement app for sailfish it would be totally useless
dsilveira ( 2014-07-22 20:16:53 +0300 )As sais the last link the developer have plans to port kdeconnect to sailfishOS. The android app works except for the notifications. You can copy files, control the mouse from the mobile or control media players on the computer from the mobile. You can try the app from https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=org.kde.kdeconnect_tp
jmaspons ( 2014-07-22 20:39:05 +0300 )You are right. Suse 13.1 works with Sailfish exellent. I tried Knoppix 7.2 - wich works partly, you get no possiblity to have a copy. Ubuntu Vers 12.04 allway updated works the same way as Suse 13.1, Mint 17 does'nt even exept Sailfish connections.
Yes, sadly my favourite mint 17 is quite a downer regarding Jolla experience...
mosen ( 2014-07-22 16:11:53 +0300 )mint 17 works now ok with mtp over usb, ssh sjould work with any distribution, then i use a local owncloud service for sync
pmelas ( 2014-07-23 02:21:41 +0300 )facepalm... thanks for your comment and correction i tried again with another usb cable and mtp works for me also! I upgraded to mint17kde last week and since then used a broken cable that i thought to have already sorted out a while ago :P
mosen ( 2014-07-23 17:07:53 +0300 )I'll say none. (period) If you are ok enabling dev mode (which is not something your mom would do) and all the ssh/"hacker" stuff you won't have trouble with any distro.
From a mom/gradnma/non geek dad/grandpa POV the situation is a bit meh. And this applies to Mac also.
The best solution i found was Sailserver but it has a loooooong way until it becomes a mature application. I genuinely believe that jolla should have gone for an unlike/over WiFi solution for managing the phone from the beginning.
What doesn't work? Personally i plug in USB and my Jolla shows up in KDE and dolphin i think mom/grandma/non geek/dad/grandpa can handle that. Jolla JP-1301 works great in Linux.
abc123 ( 2014-07-03 02:37:47 +0300 )Linux lite 2.8 works fine for mounting my Aqua Fish and having access to Mass storage and SD card via mtp. Had some issues to get ssh working with Linux lite. Ssh works fine for me with Voyager X8, but in Voyager I had trouble to mount my Aqua Fish via mtp.
I am using Arch Linux derivative Manjaro. Mainly use it for ssh into the phone for logfiles and scp file and folder transfers!

I'm using Gentoo, Debian and FreeBSD (which is not a Linux), and they all work great with Sailfish.
Venty ( 2014-07-03 13:16:24 +0300 )what exactly do you mean when you say 'works best with' ?
