Using the networks voicemail is frankly archaic, having to call the number and navigate via the voice menu to manage and listen to voicemails is a pain. Why not use the phones storage instead?

Instead of using the mobile providers service, the phone answers and records the call, as well as a menu to view/play/delete/set greeting .etc. Not sure if best suited for App or native feature in the dialler.

This might upset carriers as it replaces a service they offer (and often charge to listen to voicemails)

AFAIK no currently available smartphone does this, so this would be a unique feature for the Jolla

On-device would be slightly less archaic, imo. It's useless when you've switched off your device, have no coverage, have flight mode enabled, etc. My VoIP-provider sends voice mails per e-mail, which thanks to the modern wonders of IMAP is made accessible everywhere where I have e-mail access, including Jolla. (This would be totally awesome, were it not that Jolla still doesn't support SIP VoIP, still doesn't support the GSM codec used for those voice mails and still doesn't have IMAP IDLE support. /rant)

Sure there are edge cases where it's less than ideal, but my phone spends the overwhelming majority of the time on and connected. The edge cases can still be covered by network provider, or simply regress to a missed call notification.
