Transparent area of icon goes black

When using icons for DBUS notifications with transparent areas, the alpha channel is displayed as black after the icon has been displayed correctly a number of times.
The files are RGBa PNG's with a size of 84x84 px, created with Gimp.
Is anybody else experiencing this? Is there any way to stop this behaviour?
