i cant open word attachments that i receive by email

Download and install 'Documents' from Jolla store, that should solve your problem.
I recently had a similar problem, where I wanted to open a .pdf on my Jolla, I was directed to Jolla Store to download 'Documents', the app worked a treat, try it.

EDIT: I can confirm, by sending myself an email with a .docx file attached, that the 'Documents' app from Jolla Store does indeed allow the user to open/view word documents.
