Android apps close unexpectedly

I experienced this quite often - android apps tend to close themselves unexpectedly. Typically the process is:

  1. Start android app
  2. Use the app
  3. After some time the app closes itself (often, not always; not related to anything I do in the app)
  4. Immediately after a close has occured I can't start the app (neither any other android app) again - it says the app is loading but then the "loading" window closes and app is never started
  5. After a while I can start the app

I tried few apps and each of them sufferred from this. The apps were: Barclays, LiveScores, GooglePlay Store, Whatsapp, Dune II.

What's more, Dune II managed to completly crash the whole device - random artifacts on the screen and after few seconds device just rebooted.

Are those common problems with Android apps? Because of those issues I can't use any serious android apps (notes etc.), because I don't want to lose my data when app would close itself.

On my device android apps seem to crash daily. I do not have other findigs of the cause exept that I usually have at least six native apps open at the same time. At first android apps might run OK for a while, but when one of them crashes I cannot launch any android apps. If I close for example two native apps and launch an android app again, the app launches and keeps running OK. Resource issues?

Whatsup shutsdown or refuses to start, if there is five or more SF apps running.

How much memory the typical SF app can consume?

Is the "Crash" of whatsup related to the usage of the memory as pointed out by the reference post and the answer by @simo?

i know this won't help you a lot but this is exactly the behaviour that android apps had shown on my android device ;D

I've run into this too, and noticed that it seems like a memory (RAM) issue. Also, older android apps shuts down without any warning if a newer one needs more memory.

As a solution, it would be great if Sailfish would warn the user about insufficient memory when opening a new app, and even better if Sailfish UI, in this case, suggested a list of apps (and their memory usage) to close before opening the new one.

I agree that this issue is more likely related to low RAM memory. I had WhatsApp, Google Play services etc. on and I was browsing Google Chrome, suddenly all these processes were killed.

But I'm wondering whether the whole aliendalvik crashes since @restless_being said that it takes a lots of time to open Android apps after crashing. This could be due to aliendalvik crashing hence it takes pretty much time to restart it.

This is called "Crashing". It is what computer programs do when they meet an unexpected error. Most of the time they won't just happen without the user doing something, but sometimes when there is something wrong with the environment the software is running in, it might lead to unstability and random crashing. This is mostly unavoidable, and unless you can submit any logs or ways to reproduce, there is no possible way of knowing what broke. This means that if you can, try to crash it again by repeating exactly what you did, and post what broke it.

From the enduser point of view the apps just close. Technically it's probably a crash of android layer, not the problem of the individual apps. As I wrote - the problem is not reproductable - happens randomly. I would be more than happy to send some logs, just say me where I can find them.

i have the same problem. the only help i can provide that in my case it seems to be related to internet availability . when starting an Android app when having reduced wifi access and no data connection it seems to prevent any Android app from starting

I have another problem (in addiction to yours): in Android applications I cannot use the keyboard; even this bug appears randomly until reboot. All this is very problematic for someone like me that want to use the Android applications on Jolla!

What version of Sailfish does your Jolla run ? I saw that behaviour on my Jolla prior to 1.0.2.5.
