Minimised Android apps should show latest info on 'cover'

When Android apps are minimised, the minimised cover shows info as on the time of minimising the app. Since Jolla handles multitasking so well, it would be ideal if the minimised view showed the latest content that would be in the app if the app was in the forefront and maximised.

This would be helpful for running apps like whatsapp so that we can atleast see if we have new messages.

I believe this is not easy to do since multitasking of Android apps is not managed by SailfishOS but by the Android runtime.

I feared that would be the case. Do you think it might be possible to set intervals at which the cover can update?

I don't know the details since I am not a SailfishOS developer. Mine was just a consideration. Actually I am amazed that SailfishOS manages to show separate covers for Android apps in the first place.

The problem is that Android apps don't run in background, that's how Android works, it freezes the apps. If you look at the "opened apps" view on an Android phone, I think they are also just screenshots. Updating the cover would imply to wake the app each time, which would cause RAM eating and battery draining.

Does that mean that WhatsApp notifications don't show up in the notification view? I remember that Skype notification were working and displayed in the notification view few month ago.

They do show in the notifications view, but its not reliable. It only works a few times. Plus I have never received a sound notification

I agree this would be nice, but it would most probably be quite RAM consuming - If this is implemented, I'd suggest to do it only for selected Android app covers, and as optional. For example:

  • Long hold on Android app cover > menu > update every XX seconds / stop updating the cover

The update process would simply take a new snapshot form the Android app running on background, and replace the previous cover snapshot. This should use a decent amount of RAM, and only during the process. For XX, maybe 20secs would be nice? (different time gaps could be voted as comments)
