The grey text in the search box, in my opinion, messes up a lot of new users. It's effect is that people write their question to the box, and their own answer/idea to the next box. What should be written there to keep the portal clear?

What we have:

  • Question/topic line (Please enter your question)
  • Add details (detailing the question - not answering!)
  • tags (for categorizing the question)

Seach for tag askbot (or together) reveals the importance. The amount of questions asked is rising high, because old ones are harder to find all the time, and the amount of duplicates is rising. We're on the edge about right now to clear upp some mess, and every effort helps.

I think "search, ask or submit idea" is the best way to characterize the purpose of this field and it should be left like this.

Whatever you write within the 30 characters you have available, fit for a certain number of users but doesn't fit for some others. Such wording discussions usually tend to be never ending and never find a 100 % solution. The fact that more than 1'200 topics were submitted and discussed so far without major complaints about formats makes be believe, that the whole approach cannot be that bad ....

In my opinion, "submit an idea" should be omitted (as ideas should be answers). The grey text could be: "Search for questions or ask a new"

Also, "Add details" could be more clear as "Please detail your question. Note that later you may answer your own question with an idea"
