So, I used to be a Jolla user some time back but switched back to Android due to the lack of some (or not fully functional) crucial messaging and media applications. I'd like to get back onboard, but these are still things that I've been thinking but haven't found any information regarding them.

  • Whatsapp. Since Jolla still lacks an official client and Mitakuuluu users have been banned from the service, how are the Android version functionalities on Jolla? Do the notifications work by default and does it find contacts propertly? Can I share images etc.?
  • Facebook, how is the Android version of Facebook working for you guys?
  • 1Password, Is this top-tier and must-have (for me at least) password manager available from Yandex store for Jolla?
  • Anki, An app for memorizing stuff. Crucial for me studying languages while commuting in the mornings and evenings. Any idea if it's available?
  • Telegram. I heard that it's available from Yandex store. Does it work properly?
  • Twitter. Same question as with Facebook.
  • Do the Android apps support getting phone contacts to use in their apps?
  • Chromecast support. Based on what I searched from this site, some people had managed to get their Android apps working with Chromecast. Any experiences on that?
  • JuiceSSH, any idea of the availability on Jolla as an Android version? I could just use the terminal for that but the keyboard was horrible (not native Jolla keyboard) back when I was using it. Plus, JuiceSSH supports mosh, which had to be compiled manually back then if I wanted to use it from terminal.

I guess that's most of it :-)

EDIT: During the announcement of the Jolla Tablet and Sailfish 2.0, nothing was really any mentioned what new stuff the major 2.0 release would bring. Any idea what's coming?

You don't need the Yandex store anymore, you can just install any store you want, I prefer Aptoide.

Thank you but this still doesn't really answer my questions though. :) Even if I use another store rather than Yandex, I'd still like to have these apps up and running well.

Sure, but as you were wondering about the availability of some apps, essentially everything is available, just not on Yandex.

Doesn't really seems like you want to go back to SailfishOS at all :p

I can't really answer your questions regarding how well the Android apps work on Sailfish. As far as availability goes. You can install Google Play: http://www.jollatides.com/2014/04/03/updated-installing-google-play-on-jolla/

And as far as alternatives to the apps you want, here my take:

Whatsapp - Don't use it, so would not know. Android notification in general are not very good at this stage.

Facebook- I use the browser (and I think most people do). Facebook messages goes straight to the Sailfish messages app. There is also an facebook app, but Facebook has a very limited API so don't expect much. (https://openrepos.net/content/sfietkonstantin/friends)

1Password- I use ownKeepass (https://openrepos.net/content/jobe/ownkeepass). Which is compatible with Keepass 1x files. And you can use ownCloud or Sailbox (Sailfish dropbox client) for syncing the files.

Telegram- Don't use that either :p But there is a Telegram webview app (https://openrepos.net/content/olpe/sailfish-telegram-webview)

Twitter- I use Tweetian. (https://openrepos.net/content/veskuh/tweetian-sailfish-os)

Do the Android apps support getting phone contacts to use in their apps? - Don't think so. You could maybe use an android contact app, which the android apps then could use?

Chromecast support - Most likely Android apps with Chromecast support will work. I don't think there is any apps for Sailfish with Chromecast integration.

Here is a list of Sailfish apps I use, that have replaced Android apps:

Twitter - Tweetian

Spotify - CuteSpotify

Weather- MeeCast

Imgur - Sailimgur

Podcast client - gPodder

Youtube - YTPlayer

Keepass - ownKeepass

Dropbox - Sailbox

ownCloud - Cargo Dock (File manager with support for ownCloud and Webdav etc.)

Instagram - SailGrande

During the announcement of the Jolla Tablet and Sailfish 2.0, nothing was really any mentioned what new stuff the major 2.0 release would bring. Any idea what's coming? - Only Jolla knows, I guess. Hopefully they will give us some information soon.

EDIT: Now that I have completely discouraged you and everyone else tempted to try Sailfish with Android apps.. Let me share my experience on how well the Android apps I used/use is:

Google Play: Works as expected. But you might encounter problems when downloading purchased apps (seems to work fine now) There is an workaround, should you have problems however: http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=1399352&postcount=30

Google Maps: Works as expected.

Spotify: Works as expected.

Shazam: Works as expected.

Plex (Free for plex pass users): Works as expected.

IKEA: Works as expected.

Soundcloud: Works as expected.

Snapchat: Kinda works. On Sailfish 1.0.8 recording and playing videos don't work. Worked before. It's reported that playing videos work in the opt-in update 1.1.0.

Firefox: Works as expected. I actually use it more than the native browser.

ownCloud: Works as expected.

Nova Launcher: Works as expected. You also get the standard Contacts and Phone app. And the contacts app actually adds your contacts (from SIM i think).

Thank you, very useful answer. I understand your criticism on if I want to go back to Jolla at all, but I consider myself technical user and enjoyed my time earlier with Jolla. Besides tinkering with my phone, I also like to have some common mainstream apps just to enjoy using my phone instead of thinkering my way around all the time. :) The list of alternatives was indeed useful.

Yeah, I understand the need for mainstream apps, and not having to tinker all the time. If you want a general picture of how well/bad Android apps works on Sailfish, have a look at my EDIT in the above answer :)

Whatsapp and Facebook: Working fine

1Password I use keepass and there is a good native app available. Keepass is also available for every other platform you can imagine.

Anki Don't know about that :-) But if it is available in Amazon app store / or in Aptoide Appstore it is easy to install and should just work (Like almost all other android apps)

Telegram Android version is working fine, hopefully we will have a native app sooner or later.

Twitter There is already a native app called Tweetian. It's one of the best Twitter apps I ever used!

Do the Android apps support getting phone contacts to use in their apps? Currently sometimes there seems to be a problem with that. Reboot and it should work. Will hopefully get fixed soon.

Chromecast support Don't know

JuiceSSH Don't know, but like Anki, it should work if you find it somewhere to install it.

WhatsApp and Telegram working fine for me. Get pop up and sound notifications for Whatsapp as well. Sound notitifcations needs a hack of installing some sound notification app (like Zedge) to create a config file. Am able to share pictures as well. No issues except the ugly Andoid interface ;-)

https://together.jolla.com/question/25965/android-apps-dont-trigger-any-notification-sounds/

Tweetian works very well. No major complaints.

Dropbox, android version: works

1Password, android version: works, but you can't cut/paste from android to Sailfish, making it mostly useless

Telegram, android version: works
