As far as I understand, there are only two cover actions not because of space restrictions, but because the up and down swipes on the main screen are already used for switching to the lock screen (swipe down) or list of app icons (swipe up). So if there were swipe down and swipe up gestures on the covers themselves, one would need to swipe outside the covers in order to get to the icon/lock screen (which is where, on those thin margins between covers?).
Personally, I would like Jolla to switch to the MeeGo's horizontal swipe between screens. It would (a) make your suggestion possible, because we could use the (now unused) swipe-from-outside-of-the-screen left and right gestures on the app screen to switch to the lock and icon screens; (b) show more than 9 apps on the app screen (allowing the user to scroll the running apps list up and down). Also, it just seemed more convenient for me to use horizontal gestures for switching between screens on N9 (but it may be a personal thing).
cover actions are directed actions and as long as there is one DOF used by the UI there won't be anything but what is already requested for the phone (pull-then_up/down or something alike)

chemist ( 2014-12-11 22:52:54 +0200 )editthey probably removed the new tab action from browser just because u need to open the app anyway so it was kind of useless. Imho are the covers big enough (even on the Phone) to split them into upper and lowre half if needed and make 4 actions possible
