There is lots of discussion to have N9 style clock, battery level, signal info on the screen when device is off, aka Glance screen (ref: Glance screen )

Someone needs to locate the phone in pitch black. (ref: led-beacon-breathing-led )

eink is no good for this, unless it does have a backlight. (ref: e-paper-e-ink-toh )

Solution to both of these could be OLED toh.

This display could be active only when phone is facing down (or nothing in proximity), so one could easily select when to have this on/off. And of course if you don't need it, don't use that toh.

(hmm... my OH breakout PCB's have been shipped... maybe i'll do a quick prototype of this then. I'll post some pics)

progress update. Still uses external 3.3V supply, and needs to be root.

This sounds very good and interesting, and it would be awesome if you get a protoype working. One question though: is thr i2c-connectivity enough to drive a display, and are there restrictions on the display resolution, size or other characteristics?

Displays i have available ATM are 128x64 pixels, about 1.3" diagonal mono. (two sections, one yellow one skyblue) These can be driven over i2c easily, I think this is enough for "glance screen"..

I'm also missing the N9 LPS screen and so I'm going to work on a OLED screen (to add to my 3d-printed TOH). Ordered a couple of types and waiting for delivery. I hope they are sufficiently flat.

The first answer in the e-ink thread, is the same as your idea.
