First time ever, I got a "group sms" or a "group mms". What it looks like is I get a notification about a received MMS (a cloud with the play button icon) on the lock screen, then the messaging app shows I got a regular SMS from a regular phone number.

The message appears in the person's SMS thread, so I believe answering that would only send an SMS to the sender. Meanwhile, Android devices respond to all the phone numbers that the initial group message was sent to. (Not all are ideal, my friend here reported his phone reports "out of memory" while attempting to respond). The message details don't provide any details, like the list of recipients that the MMS contained.

I know that group mms is a thing that is mostly used in the US, but is there ANY chance of an official OR unofficial way to get this working? I am contemplating switching fully to Sailfish, but too many people in my life use group mms for me to feel comfortable not having it. I understand that Android apps are not able to be used in this way, correct? (I am using a Sailfish port on my Nexus 5 without Android, so I can't test it personally.) Any help on this would be very appreciated.

This could be a deal breaker for some people.

Yes it totally messes with my Android app and mms service, group messages show as continuous strings and only of the sender, you cant tell who else the message was sent to.

Is there any work arounds?

Is it possible to use an Android app that supports group sms/mms as the messaging app for SMS/MMS? I use Signal on my Android and it handles the group SMS/MMS messages correctly. (Yes. I have unfortunately switched back to Android, because of this missing feature. Lot of my friends and colleagues use it, so I have to have it working.) I don't remember if I was able to install Signal on Sailfish. Is it possible to change the default app for SMS/MMS on Sailfish OS?

This feature is ESSENTIAL, and the reason I had to abandon Sailfish. I understand that it might not be used in Europe, but it is assumed in the U.S. that you have it, and is required to communicate with others. Pease correct this omission (that can't be that complicated to implement) so that I can use my Sailfish X again.

After using Sailfish briefly and noticing this feature wasn't supported, I too am considering leaving Sailfish for the immediate future. I don't use it as frequently as other people might, but when I do get a group text it tends to be something that requires my attention. The lack of this feature makes using the OS nearly untenable in these situations. I understand this may not be common everywhere, but for a great number of potential North American users, it's basically mandatory.

I've looked through the sources, but not found the SMS messaging code. Is it part of the proprietary code, or is it open source? [edit] oh hey yes it just uses telepathy/ofono, purely open source. So we can fix this ourselves.

This would be cool ☺ Group SMS is definitely a useful feature!

A phone on which I can install sailfish is arriving late next week, so I'll give this a shot after that if noone beats me to it. No guarantees, as I've not yet found any details about how it's done by android and iphone. https://github.com/aosp-mirror/platform_packages_apps_mms/commit/c1f03822994dc09939060c41e0ce9cb37175b054 (posted by someone here) looks most informative.

@ossi1967 Im sorry that Im new and not technical for your standards!!! You are mean and disrespectful to anyone who has an opinion and or tells you something that you are not comfortable agreeing with. As mentioned here before!!! This forum is designed for people to share ideas and talk about projects!! Not everyone has to technical or understand RFC's!! But they may have an idea how to make a device better

Group Messaging is not a US based only thing it works amazing for me in Germany and other countries on different networks. Not sure how else to explain this to you... But Ive reached out to Apple support this morning and guess what Nobody calls it RCS or anything else... they call it Group MMS!!

So with my final post on this topic!!! who cares who is right or wrong... the point of this was to tell you that until "Group Messaging" makes its way to the phone, Sailfish is missing out on customers!!!

You can argue your point all day long and best if you argue with yourself... Im new to this forum and with the feeling of disrespect that i received on here... I will go back to my Maemo.org site at least there people are willing to find solutions and work towards resolving issues and not post arguments who is right or wrong!!!

@siucdude please don't get mad. I felt the same way about comments from @ossi1967. We are hoping someone from Jolla will see this and take action to help us solve this issue. Some people thinks that if they don't have it or need it, it must be crap. Anyway, the discussion is not about @ossi1967, so I hope we can continue the healthy discussion, and someone from Jolla or someone with programming knowledge may respond and help us figure this out.
