Option to go back to MeeGo VKB layout switching (by swiping) [released]
Sailfish is surely an improvement over Harmattan in a lot of things. But, unfortunately, some things seemed actually better to me the way they were in N9. One of these things is keyboard layout switching.
I switch layouts constantly, since I type in Russian but use a lot of English words and acronyms. With N9 it took a fraction of a second to swipe the keyboard from outside of the screen, and I was ready to type again. On Jolla, it takes no less than 2 seconds: press space, wait until the animated list of layouts will show up (which is useless for me since I only have two layouts enabled), release your finger, and wait until the layout switching animation will finish. This lowers the typing speed a lot for me.
I'm sure that many other users (especially those whose mother tongue's alphabet differs too much from latin) liked the Harmattan's version of Maliit more as well.
This feature was released in 3.0.1.11 Sipoonkorpi.
A more convenient way to switch layouts in my opinion is performing a swipe gesture on the space bar (like in the Android 3 keyboard), since you don't have to reach the outside of the screen and it won't conflict with global edge gestures.

>you don't have to reach the outside of the screen
For me there was nothing wrong with reaching the outside of the screen on N9.
>it won't conflict with global edge gestures
On Harmattan there was no conflict whatsoever. This feature was working perfectly on N9 alongside with global edge minimizing gesture. You could just swipe above the keyboard to minimize the app.
>a swipe gesture on the space bar
This will render a much more useful concept described in this post impossible.

The N9 was significantly smaller, so reaching different edges was easier. I don't see any problems with binding a swipe in any other part of the keyboard to cursor movement, athough it would actually conflict with swype-style input that a lot of people want.
bulkin ( 2015-02-28 18:19:50 +0200 )edit@bulkin: you are right, a lot of people like Swype. But I, for one, do not. I want to manually type whatever text I want, letter by letter. I've got into a SERIOUS trouble once, because my android phone silently "corrected" my sentence, making it obscene. (Since then I always double-check the message before clicking "send"). I also tend to use a lot of exotic scientific words in my conversations, which are usually absent in the autocorrector's vocabulary, so I have to spend additional time to battle against the autocorrection system.
This is why I, personally, would prefer to use the swipe-over-keyboard gestures for cursor navigation and text selection, like described in nount's suggestion. Of course I understand that all people are different, that's why I just humbly ask for an option to make the VKB behave as I want.
