[Idea] Prizes for top contributors on together.jolla.com [answered]

Hello guys :)

I have been thinking about this for a few days and now I'm publishing it here...

What about having prizes for top posters (or top contributors) on together.jolla.com? By top posters/contributors I mean people who have spent time helping the community, in any way.

It's also worth poiting out that it's not easy to determine those people :) One good meter could be: people who have posted most of the "accepted" answers, for example. But this is just an idea, feel free to comment saying your opinion.

Prizes could include stuff like

  • access to testing repositories to help Jolla test new software releases before they're released
  • similar "DoItTogether" activities
  • ADD COMMENTS TO THIS QUESTION TO SUGGEST MORE PRIZES! :)

What do you think about it? Do you want to see this realized?

Then please upvote it to get it higher in the priority list :D

Cheers, and happy new year to everyone! faenil

To be honest for me it is the most fun where there are no prizes here. I don't say giving prizes is a bad idea, but keep in mind possible negative side effects like for example unhealthy competition to win prizes (someone could give minus to someone not because of quality of answers/ideas but because of competition etc.). I think the main ultimate goal of coming to this place and contributing should be always to have excellent platform and community, prizes (if any) should probably be symbolic ones (like for example dinner with @faenil in Pisa :-P).

And this is said by person who has plenty of karma ;-)

I would suggest to keep up with old maemo tradition of Competitions. Where there would be categories with prices. It can be done by community donations (like it was a lot of times before already) and as well donations from Jolla (if they want or can donate other prices like discount for store, TOH, phone, t-shirts, hats, boats, personal meeting and so on).

It would help to have some challenge, to bring spirit and most important to get more native apps :)

P.S. examples from maemo:

I don't think TOP posters should be determined by the amount they contribute but by the quality! Who will judge here? That'd require a good system which is not yet implemented here ;-)

Other than that - why not?

I agree with you. While the idea could make sense, the karma is a too rough measure of contribution and a competition on who get morre karma can lead to a decreae of quality contribution in favor of quantity of "popular" questions, idea, answers and so on.

Yeah - anything degrading the experience here should be avoided. Contribution should happen because the cause is right and the contributed content makes sense, not to get any kind of reward aside of potential success further down the road. That's how it works, doesn't it?

However I do not get the idea behind why access to testing repositories should require more than a switch on device. Everybody has earned that right by supporting Jolla in my opinion.

I never proposed to use karma as measure :D

I think one good measure could be "authors of the top accepted answers" for example

Still why put anyone in favour or in front of the other contributors. Don't try to create a two or more class hierarchy here :P

I know it's hard to have discussion and such all on the same pane but it might be necessary in the long run.
