I am too much used to the "glance screen" feature of Nokia N9 and my current Nokia Lumia device. Glance screen is the information displayed on the device's screen when device is idle. For example it shows the time and notifications so that you don't have to wake up the phone to look at the time or see the notifications.

Update: This is partially implemented, i.e., available under the hood (mce-tools) and can be enabled using developer mode or available in setting using openrepos patch. Thanks to @coderus again.

I believe, we as community can help with testing and monitoring power consumption so Jolla can see the feasibility of making it available as a regular feature.

Nokia has this feature on non-oled (IPS LCD) screens as well. You are right that it would drain more battery but I would give up a few hours of battery to have this useful feature.

There could be a setting: "Display always on when connected with charger". I guess a changer can drive the display and charge the battery at the same time.

At a quick glance, on absolute minimum brightness the lcd backlight draws only about 10-15mA, but it's not the only thing affecting power consumption. Anyway with some optimizations this might be feasible on Jolla too.

Glance screen would be awesome! I used also glance screen as a night lightPut whit Nokia C7. Put phone close water glass and voila! You have shattered light.

Glance screen is also handy when in dark you cannot see where's the phone so glance light reveals your phone, handy!

Alternatively, using the proximity sensor to activate the lock screen for a little while (when not in pocket, obviously) could also do the trick. ie, hover hand over.

My problem with the N9 was that the clock was too light during the night. I'm much more of a hover-hand to see the lockscreen shortly and it turns off afterwards-person.

Proximity sensor is also technically easier, as we keep it on in many cases to spot if we're in a pocket or not.

That might be an alternative mode. I would prefer always on mode since I like seeing notifications when my device is sitting on my desk without any cover or something that hinders the proximity sensor.

Tip for Stskeeps when using Nokia N9 - if the light disturbs you during the night just put the phone upside-down :-)

(re N9 during night) @Stskeeps, @fk_lx - or even better, just cover the proximity sensor (top right) :-)
I used to place a small pack of paper tissues, that resided on my nightstand anyways, over the top-right corner - no worries about scratches, and easy (though night vision ruining) to check the time if I happened to wake up in the middle of the night.

This could be a very good compromise as it will be very hard to implement a N9-styled functionality due to power consumption.

To my knowledge the proximity sensor is already monitored by the process handling the dubble-tap to wake funktion. This to prevent powering up the phone in ones pocket.

Glance screen was not included in update 8, so here is the instructions to enable it:

devel-su
pkcon install mce-tools
mcetool --set-low-power-mode=enabled

And it can be disabled with

mcetool --set-low-power-mode=disabled

Glance screen is enabled for a few seconds after phone is taken out of the pocket or hand is waved over the phone. So it is not completely N9 like behaviour, but still quite neat feature.

Didn't know the feature with waving the hand other our Jolla to activate the 'LPM' screen but this feature is just great. Anyway I would love to see a N9-like LPM screen with adjustable font-colour on an AMOLED screen (hopefully coming with next Jolla phone 8) ).

Hi, I've activated the option and the feature is really cool.. I would like to report a small bug: the weekday-date fields are never updated. So if you look at the glance screen on friday evening and then on saturday morning, the date will be ok but the weekday wil still show friday.

Currently it will result in high power consumption because Jolla phone display is IPS - it consumes the same power despite amount of lighten pixels, while N9 display is AMOLED, where consumed power depends on the amount of lighten pixels. Both types has own pros & cons.

Best solution is to create e.g. E-ink TOH ;)

How about the opposite of the "hover hand over" option? Allow the user to configure the glance screen, which would display time and other status info at lowest brightness. And, like the N9, switch off the screen when the proximity sensor triggers. That will disable it when inside a pocket, protector case, or placed face down.

my HTC OneX had an IPS screen.

The obvious things like: Time, battery, new mail, missed calls, etc...

Then some kind of plugin system where other applications or services could could specify a pictogram and/or a text string.

The glance screen is the feature I use at least 20 times per day to check the time or if any missed calls, received SMS... I'm OK to spend more battery power for that feature. When the screen is not covered (detected by proximity sensor), just display that glance screen.

Clock, new SMS, and missed calls (and voicemail) are the most useful info I would love to have// Second priority would be: date +level of battery + connection to Internet (connected to what : cellular name or wifi hotspot...) I currently also use it for: Meecast + song & singer of current media

@dsilveira But the point is that it requires a double-tap and edge-swipe from above, or two presses on the power button, when all you want to do is to e.g. check the time real quick.

@koudi pointed us within another question [1] to article [2] that describes a Lumia 920 (IPS screen) doing almost the same thing as the AMOLED glance functionality. So it seems not impossible and perhaps the current Jolla phone IPS panel could do the same?

@dez: If we talk a decrease of standby-time from say 40 hours to 28 hours I'm still in for it. I charge my phone almost every night anyway and the days I need longer standby-time I disable sync, so I could just disable glance screen those days as well.

@dez: I've had this switched on my lumia 920 for a while, and I still get a day out of it no problems. I accept it might last longer without it being on, but it's definitely far from a deal breaker. I would say NOT having glance is more of a deal breaker than having to charge each night, before glance was added, I was ready to throw this phone in the bin. Now I can keep it until Australia get's Jolla.

Thanks, that's an interesting feature.

Does it actually lower the screen brightness to minimum when it shows the glance-screen? Or does it just display the glance-screen at current brightness?

@caa: Initially minimum brightness was used, but it was too dim even for brightly lit indoor conditions. So it is adjusted based on ambient light sensor, but uses dimmer-than-normal brightness curve as defined in [BrightnessLPM] at /etc/mce/20als-defaults.ini.

Glance screen or similar things like active notifications on Motorola moto x, work better on oled screens. On jolla it would drain the battery much more, because you can't switch each pixel on and of separately

I would like to have this option tho. On my N9, and this habit continues now with Jolla, the phone screen is exposed only when I have to use it, all the other times the phone is either inside its case or I put the case on top to cover the screen.

low-power-mode Glace Screen is a cool feature, but will it work in the 2.0 release? There are a lot of architecture and design changes.

I would be pleased it it will by stay in the future development and be intigated by default, so all useres can see these cool feature

And no higher power consumption noticeable

glance screen can work on jolla even without an oled display.The time could be shown after 10 seconds and then the screen could switch off
