Putting phone in standby mode while shooting video cause corruption

I seem to able to consistently make unwatchable videos by doing the following.

Opening the camera app and setting it to video mode. Starting recording a video. Pressing the standby (physical) button on the phone. Returning to the camera app. (At this point, the start/stop button is disabled.) Closing the camera app.

I took a quick look at the video in a hex editor, and it looks like the file is missing a footer.

It would be useful if the phone continued to record the video, even if you accidentally hit the standby button.
