Another Recovery Question

I searched and found many questions having to do with recovery, so maybe duplicate, but I didn't really see an answer, plus these things do change over time... As someone who tends to do a lot of modifying and chance-taking with my phone, I find myself having to wipe/reset/reflash somewhat regularly. On Android, it's not such such a big deal, because of the way recovery works. You flash a recovery img, or a kernel with recovery, and any time you're about to do something potentially hazardous, you just boot to recovery and do a quick backup. If your mod goes wrong, you just boot to recovery and restore. I think I see that you can only get into sfos recovery with a computer, (right?). I did make a backup through the backup function in Settings one time, just to test, but when I went to restore it, I got a 'unable to read, (or something like that)' error. I haven't gotten atound to testing the recovery partition yet, (which I did find in /system), because I am hardly ever at a computer, (which is also the reason why I wish I could do it on my phone). So how does the recovery work? Any chance of getting an on-device recovery any time soon? I have Xperia X Compact, sf 2137 community port. thanks
