Android apps authentication issue, is the bigger than I think?

SO I have had two separate apps fail on me, one is Venmo and the other is from my bank. Both worked until recently even after the 2.2.0 upgrade. But the Venmo app was updated via the Store from Aptoide Store. Originally the issue I had when logged in is it would not detect an internet connection both in terms of WIFI and Cellular Data plan. SO I reinstalled it and then I cannot log it, it says "Error Authenticating Venmo"

Similarly with my bank it will not let me log in either. I am wondering if there is there a new practice that Android adopted that prevents authentication.

Anyone else running into a similar problem?

EDIT: Adding an important response I received about the Venmo app. According to @ron282 Sailfish is on API 19 and and it seems we need an upgrade from Sailfish on the Android support.

Venmo is only able to support Android Lollipop (API 21) or higher devices at this time. If you’re seeing this error, that would indicate that your device is not supported. Please contact your phone carrier for assistance upgrading your phone’s operating system.

Android apps authentication issue, is this bigger than I think?are requiring Lollipop API 21

SO I have had This started on just speculation of something larger than just two separate apps fail on me, one is Venmo and the other is from my bank. Both worked until recently even after the 2.2.0 upgrade. But the Venmo app was updated via the Store from Aptoide Store. Originally the issue apps. Since I had when logged not been able to login and it seems that from communication with one of developers and stellar investigation by @ron282 that SailfishOS' Android support needs an upgrade for apps as they advance in is using the next level of Android. Using the message I received from Venmo, it would not detect an internet connection both in terms of WIFI and Cellular Data plan. SO I reinstalled it and then I cannot log it, it says "Error Authenticating Venmo"

Similarly with my bank it will not let me log in either. I am wondering if there is there a new practice that be good direction for the Android adopted that prevents authentication.

Anyone else running into a similar problem?support to be updated to at least Android Lollipop (API 21) as we are apparently only at API 19.

Android apps are requiring Lollipop API 2121 and TLS 1.2

This started on just speculation of something larger than just two apps. Since I had not been able to login and it seems that from communication with one of developers and stellar investigation by @ron282 that SailfishOS' Android support needs an upgrade for apps as they advance in using the next level of Android. Using the message I received from Venmo, it would be good direction for the Android support to be updated to at least Android Lollipop (API 21) as we are apparently only at API 19. There seems to be another factor, namely that tls1.2 is not enabled. The error I receive on my banking android apk shows an SSL Handshake error and wont let me log in, until @beeki mentioned it I did not realize the issue.

EDIT: Adding an important response I received about the Venmo app. According to @ron282 Sailfish is on API 19 and and it seems we need an upgrade from Sailfish on the Android support.support. Added the TLS1.2 reference raised in comments for @beeki. After reading through a few issues on various githubs this might be a relevant discussion to explore.
