[Xperia X] "Prefer 4G" does not really prefer 4G

Since a few weeks I have been able to add 4G to my Vodafone plan. I have noticed that at some point the phone stops connecting to 4G altogether, but only switches between 2G and 3G, even if 4G signal is present and stronger than the other two. This happens after a while, typically hours. Switching plane mode on and off does not cure the issue, but a power cycle is required. I could suspect it's a network issue but if this were the case plane mode should solve it. I am currently on 2.2.0.

When 4G works and I make a call, the phone falls back correctly to 2G/3G and restores 4G immediately after the end of the call.

Update 17 August 2018: It looks like that if the phone loses 4G connection due to poor signal it is never restored. I used my Xperia X as a hotspot in a place where there is a single place where I can barely get signal. Once reached 4G connection it could be held for hours, but if I moved the phone slightly the signal was lost and never recovered, switching instead to 2G or 3G. It also appears that a simple reset cannot fix the issue, or at least not always; a power cycle always works. Bottom line, this is not a usable condition. The year of free updates is expiring and we are left with a barely usable system with extremely serious problems in a basic function such as telephony.
