I use flight mode 3 or 4 times per day. I've noticed after the update to 3.0.2.8 that when Flight Mode is turned off the network connection isn't always restored.
Either a hashed or semi obscured signal strength symbol is shown or a hashed or semi obscured square box is shown where the signal strength meter is normally displayed.
Flight Mode has to be selected then deslected at least once to restore the connection.
