One of the good functionalities of the N9 is that when a new SMS is received while the phone is locked:

• Screen lights up

• SMS preview is displayed on lock screen

• Screen shuts down

I love this functionnality because you can just keep your device on the desk and just have a quick look at it when the SMS is received to decide what to do (ignore or unlock the phone to read) just by reading the SMS preview.

This is not inconsistent with notification screen because it is not required to have the full notification content displayed permanently on the lock screen. We can imagine the following functionnality at SMS reception:

• Screen lights up (fade-in)

• SMS preview is displayed on lock screen for something like 3 seconds

• A nice animation swiches the SMS preview to the current SMS notification icon (for instance folding the text to the sms notification icon and translating the icon to the top left corner)

• Screen shuts down (fade-out)

This behaviour could be extended to any notification type.

Note that for privacy reason this behaviour shall be only active if no locking pincode is defined.
