Spoofing Android version

I am using Sailfish X on Sony Xperia X F5121 and I am really starting to hate the Android SDK version limitation (which is by default 19). More and more essential apps are starting go out of support and stop working, with no option left to upgrade because of the Android version limitation.

I understand there is no plan to update the SDK version for Sailfish X on Xperia X (not cool Jolla), but I wish I could at least try to minimally save some of the apps by spoofing the "announced" Android version.

Does anyone know how this can be done in Sailfish / Aliendalvik? I am aware of the risks involved and am ok with it. I just need the technical details if anyone knows them.

I read about the build.prop file in the /system/ directory, but not sure if it's enough.
