Euro sign not functional in terminal

Trying to login via ssh, passwort was not accepted for many retries. After some messing arround, I've found that € sign is not functional in terminal as well as in ToeTerm. Typing it in leads to strange output on screen. Is there anyway to get it correc? Changing the password is not possible.
