If app has a vertical scroll in current view then even slight movement of finger in Y-axis leads to scroll instead of switching to desktop.
But if you "grab" an edge with precise horizontal movement then you can move you finger even to 60 degrees from X-axis - there will be no scrollig, and app will be minimized.
The first pattern shown is very annoying and demands very precise movenment. I suggest to disable screen scrolling if finger start its' movement from screen edges.
