USB-file transfer kubuntu to SFOS

I recently moved from a Xperia X to a XA2, as I direly needed android 8 support. Everything is working fine so far but I'm encountering a rather irritating problem when connecting the XA2 (3.2.0.12) to my desktop pc (Kubuntu 18.04) via usb-cable: I am only able to connect the phone as a camera ('USB PTP Class Camera') and thus only get read-only access. As I'm unable to get my smb-shares working directly with sfos (another story), I have to transfer files by uploading them to my nextcloud and download them to the phone using wifi, which is quite uncomfortable and rather slow. The problem didn't occur with my Xperia X where I always had r/w-access to the internal memory as well as the memory card. Any ideas what might be wrong/different with the XA2 compared to the X in this regard?
