Android/F-Droid Maps app not working

I used to use Maps.Me on iOS and am using the Open Source version "Maps" on Android, and I would like to continue doing so under SFOS. (I looked at a few other apps, including native SFOS ones, but didn't like them.)

I did install it from F-Droid like I used to in Android, but when starting the first time, it tries to get the first map (on the third page), and fails, saying "Download has failed: Touch to try again."

All other Android apps are able to download stuff using WiFi, why not this one? The same version on an Android (LineageOS) device works nicely.

This is on a rather new install of SFOS 3.2.1.20 on an Xperia 10.
