As the question states, there is no way to see the activity details on numbers that are not registered as a contact. As a result, only the last event (called or received a call) is displayed in the history, and no 'activity' is available.
Example: a 2 min. call with number 1234 (not registered as a contact) took place yesterday. Today we call the same number (1234). Only today's call will be displayed as part of the history list AND no activity is available (as a result, yesterday's 2min. call is not listed in the history).
Only if you save the number as part of your contact list you will have the activity available. Luckily, details are not lost BUT it requires this manual and tedious trick if you want to find out activity details.
It would be good to have activity details regardless if the phone number is associated to a contact. Alternatively, the entire call history should keep all the details for numbers that are not saved as contacts if the activity cannot be made available.
I do not think this is a bug, just a lack of functionality in the call history log...
