When the screen is locked, ie. blank, the volume button function should not release the phone to full control, meaning it would still be possible to adjust the volume (not necessarily needed to be shown on the screen even) but the screen would remain locked.
As well if the proximity sensor would possibly disable the function of the side buttons completely.
