I don't know if this is a bug, but if not then it looks to me that it is an inconsistency with other parts of UI.
When a message is opened in the Messaging app and minimized to home screen, if you tap the cover within 5 seconds the same screen appears (with the same message) but if you tap the cover after a period of 5 seconds then the appearing screen is the screen with the list of contacts and their last messages (not the same screen when app was minimized to cover).
It seems to me that there is no such behaviour with other apps and their covers and that with other apps after tapping the cover it shows always the same screen as it was when it was minimized. I guess this should be also the case with the Messaging app.

UPDATE: This issue happens only when you have any number of unread messages.
